Strong, wide seat, moderate profileColleenSee above5
Beautiful and sturdyAngelBought as part of a set to go with a table. These were a little tedious to put together and some of the backs were difficult to put on. We really had to put our weight on to them to get them to slide into position. But once they were all together we feel like they are all sturdy and will have a long life!5
Dinning chairPaulaPurchased 4 chairs. They are comfortable but backs keep popping off 2 of them. They don't seem to want to click down in place. We wished the backs were held in place by screws.3
Can you build it? Yes. Will you enjoy it? Nope. GraceAs an IKEA lover I read the reviews proclaiming this chair was difficult to build and thought “but surely I am different.” Well, guess not. We’ll start with the good: this chair is attractive, comfortable, and sturdy. It’s exactly as shown in the pictures and comes in a compact single box. However, building this chair is not for the weak. Despite there being all of 18 steps it took us about 45 minutes per chair. If that doesn’t seem too bad let me assure you it was the longest 45 minutes of my life. Steps 1-8 are fine but around step 9 the wheels come off. The nuts fall out, the pins don’t align, the spindle slips free after you get all the pins in anyway & the urge to grab a rubber mallet/wood glue is real. By the time you reach the end you will be feeling adversarial towards this piece of furniture. All this to say, the reviews are right. I don’t have any sage advice other than hire the task rabbit to put them together and pass that curse on to someone who’s paid to deal with it.3
Nightmare to assembleDanielOne chair came without parts. The others were awful putting together. Please ditch the spinning clasps. They are defective and make life very difficult. With this product you pay twice, once at the store and the second when you struggle to put it together. For the price I was expecting a better experience. 1
skansnasRiza you dont grasp the backrest because the thing will fall off. we had a hard time putting it together again 3
Love the LookAnonymous reviewerWe love the look of this chair! We bought 4 and they will go great in our new place. I would have given it 5 stars but the back was a little tricky to attach. I thought there used to be a number to call on the instructions that you could call for assembly questions. There was no number and when we tried calling customer service they were no help at all. We eventually realized that a little soap helped the backs slip right into place.4
Perfect for what we wantedKarenWe needed 4 chairs and a small table for our new den. These where perfect for our game table.5
nice and comfortable but.....Tomgood looking too but somewhat difficult to put together the horizontal rails between the leg/back frames.4
Awesome chairsMonicaI got 6 of these chairs few months ago, and I am in love with them, they look beautiful and they are comfortable, highly recommended5
Very comfortableReginaAwesome buy :)5
Beautiful and SturdyCarynThis chair looks fantastic and feels sturdy. It's also comfortable to sit in!5
Lovely chairAgnesPretty, comfortable and strong chair. I’m very satisfied 5
Defective partsAnonymous reviewerI bought two chairs but one appears defective. One base screw of the chair is not verticle which makes it impossible to form a 90-degree angle with the circle screw device at Step 10. I tried for half an hour but the screw just didn't fit in. They are beautiful but not safe to sit on without that circle screw locked in.2
Nice design, looks like qualtiy furniture.AlexAttractive addition to dinning area.5
Skansnas chairPamelaThese chairs are nice looking and overall comfortable, except for the stiffness of the seat which I hope will loosen in time.4
The first chair is the hardestJacobGreat chairs but they require special attention that is hard to find in the instructions. The stud bolts should be as loose as possible the whole time before you attach the seat. Only screw them into the sides until the thread stops. Once you have everything loosely connected and the back is snapped on, then you can tighten the plastic things. Then you can put on the seat and be done.5
Tricky but worth the effort!RebeccaThis chair is indeed a bit difficult to assemble. The first chair I assembled took me an hour, and the others far less time. Assembly is straight forward until you get to step 10. The instructions have you put the other side piece on the seat supports and leg support at the same time. I found it far easier to focus on the front seat support first- you have to maneuver the side piece to be a 90 degree angle to the cam/circle screw device. The screw will then catch, and after that you can settle the chair side on the back two supports and attach those. If you attempt this step in any other order or angle, you will be spinning that little included allen wrench for quite some time. Once I discovered the correct assembly angle I was a Skansnas assembling machine! This chair feels nice and sturdy once it's all together, and looks great. It really is worth your time.4
Over-engineered nightmare!JakeI have built an entire kitchen using Ikea furniture, cabinets, bookcases, tables, chairs. Building these simple chairs was the most difficult to assemble furniture that I have ever bought from Ikea. For the love of god, please ditch the ridiculous spinning clasps, or whatever they are, and go back to the old way of building a chair. Building a chair is supposed to be easy. Other than that, the chairs are beautiful.1

SKANSNÄS Chair, black beech

A timeless dining experience

After having designed and produced furniture for more than 70 years, we have some goodies in our archive that can serve as inspiration for new furniture. Sure, everything wasn’t better in the past, especially not comfort and flexibility, so it’s important to base the work on our needs today, just like we have done with the SKANSNÄS series.

The 1950s and 60s were a real golden age in Scandinavian design history. The lines became cleaner and the materials gave character. In our archive, Designer Mikael Axelsson found a real treasure chest of inspiration. “Typical of that time are generous chairs with wide backrests without visible fittings or screws,” tells Mikael. “But they were sold ready-assembled, and the flat pack hadn’t had its breakthrough yet.” Today, our smart wooden plug, the wedge dowel, means you can easily assemble the SKANSNÄS chair. And the plug is invisible from the outside!”

A chair to lean back in

Although many of the chairs in the archive were really comfortable, we wanted to achieve even better comfort. Through trial and error, Mikael and the team searched for the most perfect angle of the backrest and created a seat that is really comfortable to sit on for a long time. “We chose paper twine for the seat since it's strong and gives a pleasant suspension when you sit on it.”

For small and large dinner parties

The SKANSNÄS series is made of beech, a hard and durable wood with beautiful graining – just like many of the furniture in the design archive. But, today most of us put higher demands on flexibility. The tables have a so-called butterfly extension. When the house is full of guests, you can easily unfold it and extend the table in a matter of seconds. “SKANSNÄS tables and chairs are made so you can lean back and enjoy small and large dinner parties for many years.” And who knows, maybe they will also become treasures in the archive that inspire future designers.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

"In the work with SKANSNÄS, I did a deep dive into our IKEA archive and drew inspiration from tables and chairs from the 1950s and 60s, which was a golden age for Scandinavian design. I like the simple and soft shapes and the natural materials they used. Materials that are beautiful from the start and develop a nice patina over time. I brought all of that with me, but I also wanted to add new knowledge about ergonomics and techniques to make furniture that suits our time."
