Decent Substitute for Bisley CabinetMarkThe Helmer drawer unit is a less expensive substitute for the industry standard, Bisley cabinet. The Helmer does not have drawer stops and the drawers do not slide as gracefully as the Bisley, but at 30% of the cost, you can buy three for the price of one Bisley. The rollers (they are not casters) are a nice addition, although I would have preferred casters that swivel instead, so that you could move the unit more than straight out and back.4
Helmer reviewStephanieI have several of these and I love them. However, they are now doubled in price. Hard to purchase again at double the price.4
Low quality, DO NOT BUYMichaelI have never been so disappointed with a piece of IKEA furniture. This low-quality filing cabinet is flimsy and poorly designed. Within the first month, the drawers stopped staying up with any amount of weight in them (three pens would knock them down). When I reached out to IKEA for support, they told me I had no luck and that it was just the way it is. Save your self the trouble.1
size good, but falls apartJillEverything about this is cheap. Finally got it all put together. In just one movement and it fells apart. I love Ikea's other product but this one is a big mess. I am returning it.1
Flimsy and cheap MirandaFlimsy and not worth the money. Fell apart within use1
Sharp looking file!Virginia AI bought this file to roll under a desk/table that will go in my living room. While I have an office upstairs, it is just easier to have some paperwork in the living room, rather than on my dining room table. It handily supports a years worth of paperwork!5
Flimsy(had to throw it away) and drawers are tiny StephanIt's not exactly fair to call it filing cabinet - drawer are very small, would be good to keep screws and tools, not so great for office supplies, can't fit much in the drawer.
And overall construction is too flimsy, drawer railings fall of the walls, the walls don't attach securely1
Bad to WorseMThis deserves a zero stars rating for quality and customer service. The thing just falls apart. I can't even use it. Customer service was no help. So disappointed!!!!!!! Not worth it! If the store was not almost a 4 hr drive one way I would be returning this for a refund. 1
GarbageNicoleI ordered one and it came damaged. All bent and paint chipping off. It’s not like the price was cheap. Then I called thinking maybe they’d just send a replacement, but you have to schedule a pick up, can’t even ship it back. Asked if I wanted to exchange. Absolutely not. I guess I’ll just have to pay for a more expensive Bisley.1
Genuinely Bad DesignEvaThe materials are fine, the aesthetic is fine, the design is AWFUL. The drawers won't fully stay upright because the completed unit doesn't fit together properly. Literally going to have to "repair" this new item just to make it as functional as advertised. Was disappointed with this one. 1
Complete PoSPaulHeld together with push in tabs. Try to move it and it comes apart. What a waste of money. The gentleman who wrote the review on 6/25 was dead on with his review. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!1
It would have been a better use of time to light 80 dollars on fireCaresaIf you’re looking for a humbling reminder that you are not, in fact, good at building furniture—or that time is a non-refundable resource—look no further than the IKEA Helmer.
This little metal cabinet lures you in with promises of clean design and “easy organization.” What it delivers is a spiritual test of patience, sanity, and hand strength. The instructions are a cryptic series of vague diagrams that seem to mock you as you go. There are no words, only symbols—and none of them helpful.
The drawers? Flimsy. The frame? Wobbly. The assembly? Somewhere between a logic puzzle and a form of light psychological warfare. I now understand why some people become minimalists: they probably tried building a Helmer and gave up on belongings entirely.
Save yourself the trouble. Burn the $80, make s’mores, and enjoy an evening free of allen wrenches and regret.1
junkChristiwont stay together, 100% would never buy again
SO disappointed, hard to believe its ikea!1
What a downgrade!BradleyThese are absolute garbage compared to the old welded version, I have one that's held up since the early 2000's. This is not that old workhorse. This feels like it's going to crumple into itself if I so much as put a notebook in it.
Hey Ikea bring back the old version so I can crush this new one in my hands like a soda can and throw it in the recycling where it belongs 1
Worst Ikea item. Actual trashAndrewI've owned several of the old helmer drawer units. They lasted years. I didn't even read the reviews before ordering a new one. Somehow this new version is twice the price and is absolute, literal garbage. Garbage, like I'm putting it in the trash immediately. The metal is now paper thin and requires bending it all into place to make it stay together. There are zero welds, and the only screws are for the casters. The entire construction is based on bending tiny metal tabs. This of course makes everything super wobbly. The top just kinda lays on top. The drawers are one piece that you fold together like origami, then just rest on metal slots. Want to open a drawer? well you have to use your other hand to stabilize the whole thing so it doesn't collapse/implode. It's like a cardboard prop in a elementary school play. It is not furniture. It is not functional. 1
Very useful ScottIt went together perfectly.
Very easy to assemble. I plan on buying more of these.5
Just disappointedAnonymous reviewerMy dad ordered one of these based on my old version - had no idea they've gone to assembly with this. The old one I have came assembled, the sheets of metal were welded. The consumer just had to screw on the casters and handles. It's held up for 20 years. These new ones don't seem worth it. 3
Helmer drawer unitBarbaraLove it, I now have 5 of them for all my embroidery thread.5
