“I was inspired by classic industrial furniture typically used in workshops during the 50’s, as well as Meccano, to create the design,“ Lina says. “The idea was to create these beautiful storage units that have double the weight carrying capacity of any other shelves we were making at the time.” Engineer Philip Nedergaard made sure that the design held true to the heavy-duty ambition. “We built some of what we call ‘worst-case scenarios’ by loading the shelves high with concrete bags to really test that the shelves could safely hold almost anything you would want to keep in a garage,“ he says.

Perfect for a variety of usesAshleyI bought one of these five years ago for my home office and stored a very heavy printer on the bottom shelf. Then when I moved apartments, I put it in my kitchen because I had almost no counter space. After years of use (including coffee spills, hot dishes, wiping the counter, etc) it’s still in perfect condition. I bought two more for my artist studio, and I can’t recommend them enough. They are incredibly sturdy and the top is so durable and easy to clean. You won’t regret purchasing this.
Sturdy Work BenchAmandaI was surprised with how sturdy this work bench is! For those who are worried about having only one person to put this together, here's a few tips:
- For steps 4 and 5, turn it on its side (on a rug or thick cardboard) and install six screws per shelf (four on top, two on the bottom sides). If you do it according to the directions, you'll be fighting gravity. Flip and do the last two screws per shelf.
- To get the brackets to line up, install one screw with just a little bit of wiggle room (maybe a half turn). This will get the bracket close enough to the other hole while still allowing you enough movement to line everything up.
I'm a very petite person and was able to put this together in about 30 minutes. It is a bit heavy, so as long as you can lift the weight, it's a solo job.

Great Piece, but needs more shelvesAlexisI bought this piece for storage and unlike the other pieces in this line, you cannot purchase extra shelves for it. I asked in store and called the company, and both said you cannot acquire more shelves for this piece. Frustrating.

It was a little difficult to assemble on my own, and it would have been easier with another set of hands, but otherwise not terrible. I’ll be using it as stand to keep a pretty heavy terrarium on, one downside is that the wood isn’t treated or sealed. I may end up doing that on my own.

However people who could assemble this alone are wizards Harry! Because it was completely crazy. The 90 degree L things you have to screw into and somehow perfectly line up with a heavy shelf and the leg just perfectly. Like seriously ikea? I would only assemble this when you want to pick a fight with the person helping you because it’ll happen either way.

Story
The strongest storage we’ve made so far
Does your garage sometimes feel like a lost civilization? Pyramids of paint cans grouped around the car, sports equipment you can’t remember even using and forgotten hobbies in boxes stacked high. IKEA product developer Lina Ringefelt wanted to help out. The outcome: the heavy-duty BROR storage system.
Lina and her team researched peoples’ garage needs and found that there’s an interest in everything from full-on hobby rooms, to a place to pot plants and work on cars, as well as storage for everything from heavy power tools to seasonal equipment. Many people also want lockable, closed and open storage that could hold very heavy loads.

The result is an adjustable series of shelving units with closed and open storage, including a trolley that serves as a movable shelf and workstation. But perhaps the series biggest calling card is its combination of looks and function. BROR could definitely be used in the home too.

What is steel?
Steel has unique characteristics when it is stretched and shaped since it remains strong. It provides strength to everything from skyscrapers and cars to bed frames and outdoor furniture. The steel industry is moving in the direction of more energy-efficient production and stronger steel qualities. It doesn’t lose any of its properties when recycled and today steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world.

A real tough one
BROR storage system can withstand a lot. The widest and deepest shelves actually hold 285 lbs. and the smallest shelves can hold 154 lbs. This means that you can store both tires and heavy flower pots without problems. We know this since we tested the storage system by filling the shelves with concrete bags – all to ensure that they can safely hold almost anything you can imagine storing, regardless if the surroundings are tropically moist or dry and freezing cold.
