Warning: Extension not designed for the 41 3/4" bookcaseHeidiI bought the 41 3/4" bookcase and the extension because the next size up was too tall for my space. There is no information on the website indicating that these two items only go together if you're willing to drill your own holes in the top of the main bookcase. Customer support told me lack of pre-drilled holes is because some people don't want to use the extension and will want a smooth finish. That's great! Then either tell me in advance that I will need the skills and tools to figure out on my own how to put them together (a drill also wasn't mentioned in the instructions in the list of tools needed), or let people choose an option for a version of the 41 3/4" bookshelf that has the holes pre-drilled on the top of the side pieces. Customer support was friendly and wanted to help, but they sent me to a 3d party YouTube video with tips about how to drill the holes.
Give me more heightLeanneWe installed 3 Billy bookcases w/height extension in our primary walk-in closet. This has expanded our storage so much! We secured them to the wall and they are very sturdy. This provided a wonderful upgrade at a low cost!!
Great addition to our Billy Shelves HeatherWe really wanted to extend the heigh of our shelves for storage and for a sleek appearance. These were just what we needed.
Great itemSusanI appreciate all the ways IKEA is making the Billy more adaptable. This extra space at the top brings my bookcases to the ceiling, making a more built-in library look. Now, if only they’d make the desk part that attaches to Billy in this same walnut brown, my room would be complete.
Wish it said not for useCyndyIn my local Ikea store which is the only on in AZ and wanted to purchase a Billy Bookcase once we decided the one we wanted would not fit in our car we purchased a small bookcase with an height extension thinking it would work but once we got home and did all the assemble we found out the extension was not meant to be used with the size we purchased. I just wish there was something posted on the website and instore not to purchase the height extension if you purchase certain size of book case.
splendidHermanIkea always has high quality items for sale the bookcases of Billy are my favorites I have currently 9 of them and always had them in the past in all my other homes. The addition on the top i never had before but the are simple to assemble and made your bookcase even look better i love them. Overall Billy best choice for good bookcase for affordable price!
High Cost for Low ReturnAshleyThe bookshelves are 79.99 for six shelves once assembled. This is 30.00 for 1/6 of the material. This is very disappointing as IKEA prides itself on high quality for the best rate on the market. This goes against their philosophy and shouldn't be more than $20. Shame it's money grab.
Billy BookcaseBrianI love the billybookcase. I bought a couple in white be cause my plan is to paint them. After assembly I decided to get the extender which white is out of stock at my nearby store and won't let me order on the website. I was going to get a different color because again I just plan to paint them. Be advised the white is 31" and all other colors are 32" wide. So if you get white it will not fit any other color. I should have realized this on the front end but assumed all were the same since the same product. Love the bookcases but very disappointed that the white has different measurements and the extender is out of stock.

Different WhitesAdamDon't look too close. The extension is not the same white as the bookcase. It still works. Be careful with the dowells on assembly. They will break through the sides if you don't get them in fully.

WonderfulAnonymous reviewerI love that ikea has these additions but they don’t come in blue, which is the color of the billy bookcases that I have. I purchased 2 anyway, took them to be color matched and painted them myself. They are perfect!

Not designed for the 31-1/2x41-3/4 Billy shelves.BenjaminAfter taking a look at the larger Billy shelves, the top pieces have two holes prepared to receive the anchors that hold this extension onto the shelf. The smaller Billy shelves do not have these holes, but it was easy enough to drill two short holes to match. I would strongly recommend measuring out those holes before drilling! I went off of vibes and was an 1/8" off. Everything works just fine, but the extension doesn't fit perfectly on the top, and that's my fault. I'm rating this 3/5 for value because the small Billy is $40, which is just $10 more than this extension that adds ONE shelf to the unit. If this was $20, I would be much happier with the purchase. Overall, I love the way it looks, and I'll likely purchase more for my large Billys in the future.
Perfect extraKatieWe have fairly high ceilings and were able to add two of these per unit and it is beautiful to look at going almost to the ceiling. A little crown molding and they would look like built ins.
