Surface Layer was peeling offCarlosThe surface layer came with a corner peeled off. Poor quality. I didn’t want to deal with a return, so used a glue stick to help hold it on the particle board, and thankfully it was in an inner wall that connected to another piece, so it’s staying put.

Color is a little off, but just what we needed.StanWas thinking about manually adding a shelf over the Billy Bookcases we have in our second bedroom/storeroom, when I remembered that there are Billy extensions. SO much easier than building a shelf attached to the wall with hardware store materials. And it looks nicer. The only problem is that our Billy shelves were from a while ago and IKEA no longer makes the matching color. They changed them a few years back. If this was a prominent area, like a living room, this would have been a problem. But for a second room mostly out of site, the functionality far outweighs the color difference. Hardly notice that any more.
Doesn’t match Billy bookcase color/textureCourtneyThe white Billy extensions no longer match the white Billy bookcase. I just bought my white Billy bookcases on December 23rd 2024 in store. The extensions were not in stock until March 13th 2025. I purchased the extensions in store on March 15th 2025. After building them and attaching them I now see that the color and materials of the extensions are not the same as the bookcases. The extensions are like a paper type material with a yellowish greenish tint versus the bookcases that are pure white. Super disappointed that they changed the extensions without making it clear that they no longer match the bookcases. The extensions also have a finish that is smoother than the bookcases which are lightly textured on the edges. It would be helpful if Ikea either changed the name (e.g. Billy 2.0) or the color (e.g. white 2.0) to ensure that the customer can tell that the product has changed and we could verify if the two pieces will still match.

Can’t use with shorter bookcasesAnonymous reviewerI am very disappointed because I purchased the height extender to use with the 41” Billy bookcase on top of a desk to make it slightly taller. Unfortunately after assembling I realized they do not work together. This is not noted anywhere on the Ikea site. They need to make this clear and now I am unable to return it.
Nice addition to Billy lineKarenI used these above full-size Billy bookcases as part of a kitchen project. They are easy to assemble and sturdy. With the addition of Oxberg glass doors, the pieces look sophisticated.

It is easy to install and makes a more dramatic appearance than the stock, shorter unit. It also adds about 1/4 more storage space, so if you have a lot of books or other things to showcase, it makes a real difference.
Overall easy to install. The only negative is that there are additional seams which takes away from a true custom look but that is a fair trade-off. A little trim goes a long way, as they say!
Very versatileRonaldA very solid extension for a Billy bookcase. The back panel is solid instead of thin (like a Billy). Thus this is a very very solid construction that you can use in many other ways.

Great addition.DoryNice quality and was easy to assemble. The only complaint is that you have to carefully mark the top of the existing bookshelf to put the anchors in place. You need to then drill pilot holes for the anchors to screw into. If your measurements are off, your shelf extension won't line up properly. If the billy bookshelves had pre-drilled holes, that would make attaching things a whole lot easier.
