When the assembled lamp stands next to the packaging, it can be hard to see how it can fit there at all. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped base. “We realised that we could make a cross instead of a round base – both to save material and to make the lamp dividable. The cross also adds a unique design element.” The lampshade is made of soft plastic and rolled up like a tube in the packaging. When mounted on the lamp base, it spreads the light both evenly and beautifully.

Mounting screw hole on base too smallJenThe issue my copy of the Barlast had was with the two pieces of metal that make up the base. The hole for the mounting screw that passes through was too tight. The paint slopped into the hole at the factory. This reduced the size of the hole so the mounting screw could not pass through. A little work with a needle file set got a better fit than the in store demo unit. If I wasn't a model builder with those tools, this would have gone back. Not a big deal for me but definitely would have been a showstopper for other people.
Engineers of the shade, you will get the shadeKarolI cannot believe with my techie and put together self, how much I struggled with this shade. I was way worse than the rubix cube!!!! If a better shade option was added maybe a pleated plastic one? I think everything else is wonderful. Whoever would throw this away is wasting money, I would have designed a better shade from Michael's arts and crafts before I throw this away.

AwfulEricThe design of this lamp is amazing until it gets to the shade. Then it is the worst designed IKEA product I've ever put together. Following the instructions, I struggled and struggled with this darn thing for 35 minutes. In the end, the shade is dented all over from the instructions which said to squish it. The connections are not round and look more like a heart than a circle.
I am tempted to throwing both of them away.

Should have listened to other reviewersRickThe shade is impossible to put together (it's tightly rolled, you have to unroll it, reverse roll it to flatten it out, then wrestle with flimsy tabs to close it into lampshade shape). The tabs don't hold and when the quickly separate, the shade and the flimsy arms that hold it in place all fall to the ground. Love IKEA, appreciate the attempt to have a sub-$10 lamp, but this one is a big fail. I won't even donate it, it's that bad. Going to the landfill, I'm afraid.

The instructions offer little help as far as how to assemble the shade itself. No matter what we did, it would not stay together until we gave up and taped it. The process of assembly created creases which, in addition to the tape, are very obvious once the light turns on. It looks terrible, and the lampshade will not stay round.
Before this purchase I couldn’t imagine buying an article from IKEA for $7.99 and bringing it home to find it just doesn’t work right. My pillows are comfortable, my clock never runs slow, but this lamp has a totally flawed design.
I would try to talk anyone out of buying it if I saw it in their cart. I am so embarrassed that all I can do is throw this product in the trash, because it is such a waste!
Neat EvalynnThis lamp is so neat! Having grown up as a child of a lifer IKEA employee, I have seen many iterations of IKEA's skill with flat-packing items. This lamp is no exception, as it even comes with the shade craftily rolled into this box as well. I quite enjoyed watching my husband put this lamp together in no time at all, and it was on sale for only $7.99! The price cannot be beat, for a couple of academics who may be forced to move for awhile yet, but really, really needed a lamp. I may purchase another soon. If I am lucky, we will be able to unscrew this and take it with us when we move again, too.

Big design in a small package
Every now and then you need to think outside the famous box to achieve something innovative. But, when we developed BARLAST lamp, we instead stayed inside the box. The goal was a really good lamp at a really good price, and that made the packaging a decisive starting point. From there, we worked our way backwards with materials and design.
Cecilia Sondell Banke, one of our product engineers involved in the work with BARLAST, explains why the packaging can be so crucial for the price: “Transportation is often an essential part of the product cost. By packing the lamp efficiently, we avoid transporting air, and the total cost becomes lower.”

To secure stability and that BARLAST fulfils all legal demands, we made thorough calculations and tough tests. “The products with the lowest price are often the most challenging to develop. All our specialists need to be onboard from the start, and we have to think through the whole process step by step. But, they are also very creative projects that we learn a lot from. And when it comes to BARLAST it resulted in a really nice lamp in a small package,” Cecilia sums up.
