IKEA US Stands with DACA Recipients
IKEA US is deeply disappointed by yesterday’s news that the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program illegal. While the court affirmed that current enrollees in the program can remain in the country and renew their status, this decision only continues the uncertainty surrounding the program and will not allow new enrollees to enter.
This ruling further highlights the need for Congress to pass a comprehensive and permanent immigration solution for DACA recipients, often referred to as Dreamers. We believe that DACA recipients, which include IKEA co-workers and their families, contribute to our business, our society, and the US economy. We have been steadfast in our support for the DACA program, speaking out against the initial action halting DACA in 2018 and signing on to an amicus brief when the issue came before the Supreme Court in 2019. In 2020, IKEA US signed onto a letter with over 100 other business groups urging Congress to pass legislation providing a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.
At IKEA, we want to protect our co-workers and their families impacted by this decision. To that end, IKEA US offers a free, thirty-minute consultation with immigration attorneys for DACA recipients to gain clarity on their own situation and answer any questions they may have. Additionally, our co-workers may elect to use their legal benefit through our benefits coverage in order to retain an attorney, if needed. We are also exploring further opportunities to support co-workers in this time of uncertainty.
While this decision is disappointing, we know the fight is not yet over. We urge Congress to act quickly to protect Dreamers and their families and enact a permanent immigration solution.
