IKEA applauds lawmakers for reintroduction of STURDY Act
Conshohocken, PA – November 18, 2021 – IKEA applauds Senators Casey, Blumenthal, and Klobuchar for the reintroduction of the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth (STURDY) Act. This important legislation will decrease the risk of furniture-related tip-over incidents through mandatory furniture stability requirements – making homes safer.
The STURDY Act is the result of the combined efforts of many people and organizations – including parents, advocates, lawmakers and business – working together to create a safer life at home. IKEA is proud to support this legislation, which will foster collaboration between business and regulators as we seek innovative solutions to preventing furniture tip-over.
Tip-over incidents remain a serious home safety issue and the need for a mandatory rule is urgent. IKEA supports such a rule, and now – with the amendments that have been incorporated into the bill – we are proud to support the STURDY Act.
Among the strengthening of safety standards for clothing storage units, the STURDY Act also accomplishes two important objectives:
- It encourages industry to invest in research and development of furniture safety innovations and ensures that safety and testing standards can be adapted to incorporate such innovations in the future – a vital component of a comprehensive approach to reduce the risk of tip-over.
- It will also provide regulatory certainty for businesses in an expedited timeframe, which will help brands like IKEA introduce new safety innovations and bring new products to market with confidence. STURDY allows for a rulemaking process that is proven to produce final rules at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) without delay – which can often take years.
The reintroduction of the STURDY Act is the result of the hard work of many individuals and organizations, and we again thank Senators Casey, Blumenthal, and Klobuchar for their support on this issue. IKEA holds no greater sense of responsibility than when it comes to the safety and health of all our customers, and this legislation will help decrease the risk of furniture-related tip-over incidents. It will also provide a predictable regulatory environment and enable industry development of innovative stability solutions – making homes safer. IKEA looks forward to continuing to play a collaborative role within the industry, as well as with legislators, regulators, standard-setting committees, consumer safety advocates and our customers to promote safe furniture use.
