3 tips for small space living

City living often means small space living – but it doesn’t have to mean cramped living, too! Here are some tips and solutions from IKEA designers to help you and your partner stop battling over the precious, limited real estate of your apartment (especially the bathroom!), and start making the most of your shared space.

Room setting

1. Divide and conquer

Optimizing the limited space you have is a must. Dividing your vanity or closet into two – for instance, a his and hers side – will make it easier to keep your clothes and accessories organized.

Is your bathroom turning your morning routines into a traffic jam before the commute even starts? Create a separate vanity/prep area in the bedroom or another room. This way one of you can get ready in the bathroom and the other can use the prep space.

A privacy curtain on sliders is another easy way to create distinct areas in a small space. You can divide your bedroom into a sleep area and a home office, or whatever configuration you may need.

2. Storage within storage

Small space living can make staying organized even more difficult than it already is. Your best bet is creating a designated space for everything by using storage within storage.

Whether organizing your wardrobe or your bathroom drawers, try smaller bins, boxes and jars to tidy up behind closed doors. Then you and your partner can each have your own storage areas.

Also, consider how spaces that are already out of sight can be used more efficiently. Underbed storage, for example, is a smart way to organize clothes by season, to store your shoes or to handle any clothing overflow that doesn’t fit in your closet or wardrobe.

3. Showcase your collections

Storage that doubles as a way to showcase your collection is a must when you’re living in a small space. A KALLAX shelf is perfect for music lovers who need to organize and show their record collection.

The KALLAX can also be easily elevated and customized with a base on legs, boxes or doors to create a closed storage option.

Finally, picture ledges are a fun way to show and organize your collection, whether it’s albums, art, pottery or something else. With the right solutions and storage, you’ll suddenly find there’s plenty of room for everything!
