Småland Information
Children are the most important people in the world. Because of this belief, we are glad to offer our customers’ children a safe and fun place to play while they are in our stores. We strive to make our policies inclusive while maintaining the safety of children in our care. Below are some of the frequently asked questions to make your experience a positive one.
What is Småland?
Småland is a supervised play facility, where parents can drop their child off for free; it is a unique service that we provide to IKEA customers. In Småland we inspire co-play with other children. Our co-workers are here to entertain and monitor their playtime.
What activities are there in Småland?
There is an active area with play equipment, a quiet area where children can rest, space to enjoy a G-Rated film, as well as a creative space for children to color, and do some crafts together.
How long can my child play in Småland?
Children may play in Småland for a 30-minute period. This period may differ on some days in some locations. Please visit your local IKEA store page for details.
Is there an additional benefit for IKEA Family members?
Yes, if you are an IKEA Family Member, your child can stay in the play area for an additional 30 minutes. IKEA Family members will also receive special invitations to events. See your local IKEA store for details.
What are the admittance requirements for Småland?
We have chosen these requirements for the safety of all children in the playroom.
- Children must be between 37 inches and 54 inches to be admitted*
- Children must be potty trained and be able to use the restroom on their own, without assistance*
- Children must be able to play independently.
- Exception: Children with disabilities may be exempt from certain admittance requirements (e.g. height restrictions, potty-training, or the restriction on outside items allowed into the play area)
How are Småland co-workers trained to support children with disabilities?
- Co-workers will never assume that a child has a disability nor inquire if a child is disabled.
- Parents and guardians are encouraged to utilize the registration form’s “Additional Information” field to provide any child-specific-details pertaining to accessibility or disability.
- On a yearly basis, our co-workers are trained based on IKEA Småland procedures. This includes first aid and safety as well as training to support children with disabilities.
Are children with personal mobility devices, such as wheelchairs, crutches, or walkers allowed to play in Småland?
Yes, personal mobility devices for permanent or temporary mobility restrictions are allowed in the playroom.
Can a co-worker assist my child if they need mobility assistance?
- All children in Småland must be able to play without assistance from co-workers.
- IKEA co-workers are instructed not to touch any children unless there is an emergency or an evacuation need. If your child has a mobility restriction that requires physical assistance, please see the information below and meet with an IKEA Manager on duty to discuss a suitable play plan.
Can Småland co-workers provide one-on-one supervision?
- IKEA co-workers cannot provide one-on-one supervision. Småland is staffed based on a ratio of number of children at play. However, if one-on-one supervision is required, please see the information below and meet with an IKEA Manager on duty to discuss a suitable play plan.
How will a child who requires mobility support or one-on-one supervision be able to play in Småland?
We understand that sometimes a child may need more supervision and IKEA is open to this conversation. If this is the case, an IKEA manager can meet with you to plan a way to welcome your child into Småland. Here are some ways IKEA can potentially accommodate: If a child with a disability is being registered with a friend or family member who also meets our admission requirements and can provide the needed support, they may be registered together and play along with all the other children in the area.
- If the playroom is at its capacity, all members of the party will be admitted at the same time when space is available.
- Depending on availability, the caregiver can assist their child in the playroom when accompanied by an IKEA Risk and Compliance co-worker. An IKEA manager on duty will determine if a Risk and Compliance co-worker is available at the time of registration. This depends on staffing.
- If there isn’t a Risk and Compliance co-worker available, we can allow a caregiver to assist their child in the playroom when there are no other children outside their party in the playroom. In this scenario, we would wait until the current play time has ended for children in the playroom and those waiting to play. We will inform you of the estimated wait time and contact you when you and your child can be admitted.
- We take these steps because all co-workers in Småland are required to have a background check and IKEA specific Småland training.
