Very poor materials and constructionBrendaI was very excited to add another one of these to my house today. Unfortunately, it is absolutely appalling in its sturdiness. The bottom shelf is too small, the sides don’t close all the way, the panels on the sides aren’t even connected and move when you barely touch them, and I could go on. Maybe it’s because my other 3 are the black and this one isn’t. I’m extremely disappointed I spent the money I did on this today. If the store wasn’t an hour away from me I’d take this piece back and demand a refund tomorrow. Don’t waste your money.1
Shelves are worthlessAlyssaWithin the first 2 months of of owning this product it has become useless. The shelves are constantly falling through. We have a few small decor items on the shelf nothing heavy. The shelf supports are not long enough to fully support and balance the shelf .So the shelf at each level is constantly tipping forward or backward dumping its contents on the shelf below.I reached out to customer service and I was told I would hear back from the store with my options of making this right . Never happened. I spent almost $900 on a wall of these things and they are now anchored to my wall worthless . Skip these find some somewhere with some better customer service .1
Overpriced NabilCheap quality wood and paint. Have edge of the right frame falling 3
This is a bookcase that holds books and other items and looks good while doing itZacharyWe bought this in May of 2025 for our living area. It looks great and has been an excellent place to store our growing household library. The only problem I have is it is not big enough to hold all of our books! Time to get a second one that matches.....ohhh wait... the price has increase by nearly $100!!! I guess we will have to wait until it goes on sale... I would get another one today if it were under $2505
Warped side panel caused lower shelves to collapseNathanAfter one year, the right side of this bookcase has warped by sufficient amounts to cause the bottom two moveable shelves to collapse. The bookcase is definitely not overloaded and I have two others that are older which have not experienced the same warping.3
Terrible terrible bookcaseMerrieThis bookcase is so flimsy! Do not buy it. It is so thin and will crack during assembly. It is poorly designed (back screws do not work and some holes aren’t even drilled where they are supposed to be). Please
Please please do not buy this bookcase. I wish I could return it but that involves taking it apart and bringing it back to a store. Never have I been this disappointed in an ikea product before.1
Repeat issues IKEA has yet to addressSabrinaI was really hoping that the recent reviews were wrong, but I'm sad to say that this is not an IKEA product I would recommend. The top piece was cracked when I opened it, pieces were missing, and the shelves are collapsing already. Now I'm sitting here with an mostly assembled shelf that I will have to take apart and return. I thought this would be a quality and sturdy product, like the many other items I've purchased from IKEA. The backing and the pieces to secure it are flimsy and difficult to secure, the pegs and supports for the shelves do not stay in the holes or provide enough support for the shelves. I had to reach out to order spare parts from customer service, so we'll see if those come but that will not change change my opinion of this shelf. Pretty disappointed that there are all these comments about the same issues and they are still not fixing the product...2
Bottom Shelf Collapsed On First UseBruceThe bottom shelf collapsed and split in half after loading half of the shelf with books. It's a 1/4" shorter than the rest of the shelves and can't be supported by the pins. Thought this might be better coming from Ikea, but it's the same as all the other flimsy options out there.1
BookcaseChrisIt came damaged but was able to fix myself. 2nd piece I’ve received damaged. IKEA needs to take more care of their handling of the products. Also a matching TV stand looks like it’s being discontinued which is very disappointing.5
Several cracks in the wood before assemblyEthanThis is a good bookcase, don't get me wrong. But the quality control was lacking and I had to do significant independent work to make it usable. The product had several large cracks in the legs/sides, which I addressed with wood glue and clamps. It's working fine now, but none of those were part of the assembly instructions!3
Anything Hemnes…DianeLove Hemnes and love this bookcase. Attractive and sturdy, it looks great in our living room along with two narrow bookcases and the glass-door cabinet with 3 drawers.5
Collapsing shelves after just a monthCandaceThe price point led me to believe this was a high quality product. But this morning three shelves failed and broke several items I was storing on the shelves. Same issue reported over and over here: the sides bowed out and the hardware holding the shelves failed. I will be returning the item to the store. It’s disappointing that IKEA hasn’t adjusted the design of the unit after so many reports of failure. Adding reinforcements across the back of the unit and improving the hardware would prevent many of these failures, I am sure. Too bad! It looked nice in my home.1
Hermnes White BookcaseLauraI love this bookcase! It’s wood, solid, and wasn’t too difficult to assemble.5
Great bookcase!AileenThis has been such a great addition to our home! It is such a great piece of furniture! Steady and easy to build.5
Shelves fallingAlyssaSame issue as all the most recent reviews. After awhile the sides of the bookshelf start to bow out, and the pegs which hold the adjustable shelf aren’t long enough to accommodate this so the shelves all start falling down. There wasn’t a ton of weight on the shelves either, maybe 10lbs or so.1
Shelves fallingOttoI have reviewed the assembly instructions, repeatedly. The assembly was fine, but the carcass expands in the middle and drops the shelves. We’ve only been able to partially fill shelves, or leave alternate shelves empty in order to avoid a mess of dropped books. I have several successful builds of IKEA furniture that have gone very well. This one is very disappointing. I expect I will have to, some how, modify these shelves or, build new.3
Poor QualityAndrewAs others say, don't use this for books: after 11 months the sides have cupped out and the shelves are all falling because the short hardware is no longer under the side of the shelf.1
I ignored negative reviews but ..ErinI was hopeful that all of the negative reviews of the Hemnes bookshelf were just very unlucky people or people who didn't put their bookcase together correctly or something. But here I am one year after purchasing two Hemnes shelves, and both are broken. Like, dumped books on the floor broken. I bought some $60 shelves from Walmart that lasted five years, and these Hemnes shelves were supposed to be the upgrade. I can only make them "work" if I carefully put a slim stack of kids picture books on the broken shelves and back away slowly while holding my breath. I didn't overload them, either, just filled them about 2/3 across with....books. Not all hardbacks, not encyclopedias, just the thing they literally exist to hold. Pretty sure this awful experience marks the end of my IKEA days.1
Looks great, backing is poor qualityMariaIt looks great and everything and it is good, except the backing is your standard crappy thin particle board.3
NOT sturdy & DANGEROUS!!Kevin4 months after the purchase, the top 2 shelves collapsed. I've noticed that the left vertical part of the bookshelf stretched out to the side so the little metal pieces that holidng shelves are not holding at all. I need something to compress the side of the bookshelf to have the metial pieces can reach the bottom of the horizontal shelf. This bookshelf is very dangerous. Ikea must re-design this bookshelf so it doesn't get stretched out to side over time.1
