Home visit: lighting ideas weโ€™ve seen and loved

Winter is always a good time to think about lighting and the feel-good difference it can make to life indoors. To get you inspired, hereโ€™s our pick of ideas from homes weโ€™ve visited.

Beautifully controlled lighting

Dimmable light is a simple but effective idea. Change the mood of a room, from energised to relaxed, at the turn of a switch. Being able to do that by remote control used to be super expensive, but the beauty of the TRร…DFRI smart lighting range is that itโ€™s affordable and easy to use โ€“ just swap to TRร…DFRI bulbs and use the remote to control them!

Statement lighting

Treat lighting like a piece of art โ€“ consider how you hang it. The KNAPPA light is an IKEA favourite. Itโ€™s graphic outline is an eye-catcher but we hadnโ€™t seen it used as the star of the room until we visited Juli and Patrik in Hungary. Theyโ€™d hung theirs low above the dining table, with a bare wall as a backdrop. It brought simplicity and drama to the space.

Have fun with your lighting. If you love colour, play with it! We visited Toniโ€™s home, where colour made her happy. She picked lights that did the tasks she needed and added personality.

โ€œ
The key to good task lighting is matching it to how you use a room: a spotlight above a worktop makes food prep easier; a moveable work lamp means light is directed where itโ€™s needed.

โ€œ
Think about the details. From the material and the way it casts light round a room, to being able to solve everyday niggles like a late-night reader sleeping next to an early riser!
โ€

โ€œ
Use your lights to direct how people interact with your space. A floor lamp makes a corner a cosy place to read while guests will lean into a cluster of tables when lit by low-hanging light.

We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
