My washing machine smells, why is that?

The washing machine smelling bad can be caused by different things. The odour may be due to using too much detergent or fabric softener, the machine rarely running at washing temperatures higher than 40°C, or the door being kept closed when the machine is not in use. Reason 1: The machine is new and there is a bit of a smell from rubber and plastic parts.
Solution: The smell will subside over time.
Reason 2: Overdose of detergent and fabric softener.
Solution: Dose less.
Reason 3: The machine runs at 40°C and rarely at higher washing temperatures.
Solution: Try varying the washes with higher washing temperatures.
Reason 4: The door closed when the machine is not in use.
Solution: The door should always be slightly open when not using the machine.
