Why does my plate get hot in the microwave?

The fact that your plate gets hot in the microwave is due to water molecules that for various reasons are stuck inside the porcelain. For example, it could be because the plates have been in a sink and soaked up liquid, or that they have not had time to dry or cool down before they have been stacked on top of each other. When these water molecules are then heated in the microwave, the porcelain naturally becomes hot.

How hot your plate gets depends on the material it is made of. Microwaves heat up water molecules in food, but some materials can also absorb moisture and therefore become warmer.
Ceramics and porcelain sometimes contain small amounts of water or minerals that cause them to become hot.
Glass usually gets less hot, but can still be heated indirectly by the food lying on it.
Keep in mind that plates with metal rims should never be used as metal reflects microwaves and can cause sparks.
