A guide to choosing the right carpet size
Every rug serves a purpose, whether it’s the small, comforting piece next to your bed or the extra-large design that anchors your entire living room set. Rugs are especially important in open-plan homes, helping define and zone spaces. Before shopping, make sure to take accurate measurements at home and learn how to choose the right rug size for a room to ensure it fits perfectly.

Carpets for the living room
The living room is your home’s main chill-out spot. When choosing the carpet size for the living room, a high-pile rug delivers maximum softness, while a durable low-pile or flatwoven rug offers better heat management and easier cleaning against everyday dust.
Size & placement
The rug for the living room should be longer than your sofa to frame the seating area effectively.
The most important rule is the Anchoring Rule
The sofa must be placed either completely or partially on the rug. Have at least 1/3 of your sofa sitting on the rug to prevent it from shifting and to cohesively connect the entire furniture grouping.

Large and soft rugs for the bedroom
Since many Malaysian homes feature cool tiled or marble floors, a large, soft bedroom rug or a luxurious sheepskin creates a warm and comfortable hotel feeling when you step out of bed. It also helps dampen noise and trap dust particles for a cleaner sleeping environment.
Size & placement
The goal is to ensure your feet land with comfort. Place a large rug so that it extends approximately 50 cm past the sides and foot of your bed. Tip! If your bed has storage drawers underneath, choose a low-pile or flatwoven rug to prevent snagging. If you want an extra-large rug, we recommend the STOENSE, which can be combined without visible seams. Alternatively, for a smaller rug next to the bed, 80x150 cm is ideal.

Easy-clean rugs for your dining area
Choose a flatwoven or very low-pile rug as your go-to carpet for the dining table. Given the risk of spills from our local feasts, a flatwoven, washable rug is perfect for easy wipe-down and prevents crumbs from getting pushed into the pile. It also allows chairs to slide smoothly.

The essential rug combo for your entrance
In most Malaysian homes, shoes are left at the door, so a good doormat is a must. Add durable, modern rugs further in. Flatwoven or low-pile rugs work best as they’re easy to lift, shake out, and vacuum, keeping your floors free from everyday dust and dirt.

Non-toxic carpets for little explorers
A child’s room is their main playground. A low-pile rug makes the perfect surface for sitting and playing. Safety comes first. All IKEA children’s rugs have a rubberised backing to stay securely in place, even during the wildest games. Rugs also help collect dust and reduce noise. For parents, peace of mind comes from knowing our rugs are thoroughly tested, approved, and free from any harmful substances.

Durable rugs for a better outdoor experience
Add a touch of personality to your balcony or patio with an outdoor rug. In Malaysia, where the sun is strong and rain can pour unexpectedly, choose one that’s synthetic, quick-drying, and resistant to fading and mould.
