But how do you make that fine, velvety pile happen? “Velvet is crafted using a special technique where two layers of fabric are woven at the same time,” Åsa explains. “An extra thread – the pile thread – runs between them, and when the finished layers are separated, the soft, raised surface appears.” The density and height of the pile depend on the thickness and length of the thread, as well as how closely the fabric is woven. “Its dense, thick quality makes velvet ideal for interior design. A velvet curtain not only helps dampen sound and insulate against cold and heat, but it also offers that distinctive, elegant drape – no wonder it’s so loved on theatre stages.”

Curtains reduce heat from the sun as well as heat loss from draughty windows. For best effect, mount from ceiling to floor with the curtains overlapping the window, as close as possible, to prevent gaps.
Luxurious thick velvet that falls elegantly and captures the light, adding depth and richness to the colour. The dense weave dampens sound, softens light from outside and is also resistant to pilling.

Velvet – a gentle tale
Velvet has had a long and winding journey. Once woven from pure silk in ancient China, it later graced Europe’s Renaissance palaces – a fabric so valuable that only the wealthy and powerful could afford it. Today, velvet is commonly made from cotton but remains cherished for the smooth and timeless feeling it brings to our homes. Just like our cushions and curtains in the SANELA series.
”When velvet began to be made from cotton during Europe’s industrialisation, the fabric became accessible to many more people, all while keeping its smooth surface and beautiful drape,” says Åsa Hederberg, who works with our textiles. “Today, we also see velvet made from polyester, which makes it extra hard-wearing and especially suitable for upholstery.”
The secret of velvet
Timeless and easy to combine
The SANDELA series is a longstanding classic, occasionally updated with new colours – always coordinated with the other textiles. “Our velvet cushions and curtains serve as a foundation you can build on with other textiles. You might want to add patterns or something with more texture to create a personal and lively interior.” Velvet has made its way from royal palaces to modern homes – becoming a much-loved everyday luxury.

Function solution
Room darkening fabric
The room darkening fabric lets in a small amount of daylight, when it is brighter outside and darkens the room. It prevents glare on TV’s and digital screens. It gives you a strong sense of privacy as people cannot see in day or night. Silhouettes and light indoors are barely perceived.
