How to redecorate your home for summer on a budget

The summer, holiday and weekend home is that space you always associate with positive vibes: rest, time off, relaxation and disconnecting. That's why, even though you're not often there, it deserves meticulous decor that makes you feel good.

Surely you sometimes think about giving your summer home a new feel: changing some furniture, the decor, textiles or small touches. This is the perfect time to redecorate your summer home on a budget!

Renovate the living room with small details

Start with the most important room of the home: the living room. This is where you spend the most time, whether it's your first home or your holiday home. How do you redecorate the living room without spending a lot of money? It's easy!

  • Frames: take out all those photos and prints that are gathering dust in drawers and frame them. If the ones you have on show are getting old, replace them: change the photo, change the frame or both. New look for the walls and shelves of the living room.
  • Artificial plants: in a holiday home, it's hard to have natural plants, unless you visit every weekend. That's why we recommend artificial plants set in beautiful pots that fit with the other decorations.
  • Candles: make your living room more cosy by placing candles in strategic points like the middle of the table or on shelves. Even better if they're scented candles. An enchanting scent for this time of year is cranberry rose. Mmm.
  • Small decorations: if you apply these decor tips, and add a few other details like changing the cushion covers, vases or lamps, you'll have a living room that will sparkle like new for very little money.

Freshen up your bedroom this summer

The bedroom is another of the most important areas to consider in your summer home. The hottest nights might be made a little less stifling by freshening up that room with lighter textiles and simple, minimalistic decor, among other details:

  • Simplicity and minimalism: get rid of all those things that you've been accumulating over time and are now just collecting dust. Donate or restore them, to be more sustainable towards the environment and your wallet!
  • White or light-toned bedding to make the bedroom elegant and spacious. In addition, it's the default colour for freshness and summer.
  • Also in terms of bedding, the value of cotton textiles cannot be overstated for their breathability. In addition, at IKEA we only use responsibly grown cotton: with less water, fewer fertilisers and fewer pesticides, while also increasing the profit margins of farmers.
  • In this bedroom "face lift", there are small details using natural materials that help you in that search for balance and nature in this room, such as bamboo and rattan: rugs, baskets or lamps are good examples.

Change the bathroom textiles

Like in the bedroom, the bathroom is also an area that can be radically altered using textiles, and is also very affordable.

Perhaps it's time to convert those old towels into rags (don't throw them away!), and commit to rejuvenating your sets of towels and robes. Go for pastel or more vibrant colours, such as rose, turquoise or green. However, if you're a traditionalist, white and marine blue will always hit the spot in your bathroom.

In addition to towels, changing the shower curtain or bath rug will help give your summer home a new appearance.

Terrace lighting

Terrace lighting will also radically change its appearance at little cost. You can give it a completely new feel with our solar light chains, pendant lamps and table lamps. It doesn't matter what type of terrace you have, this range of lights will perfectly adapt to all needs and styles.

Customise your furniture to give it a new lease of life

Finally, don't forget the importance of giving a new lease of life to furniture. Perhaps over time you've grown tired of how your table looks, but why throw it away?

Here's a good example of how to customise the legendary LACK table to give it a new lease of life, with a fresh look. Make sure that you take a look!

We love it when customers use our products in a creative way. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But do remember, any modifications or changes that you make to IKEA products will prevent them from being resold or used for their original use, thus invalidating IKEA product warranties and your right to return.
