Tempered glass is 4-5 times stronger and more resistant to breaking than regular glass. In case it would break, it shatters into many granular pieces to reduce the risk of injury.

Not very strongArunThese shelves though very a very good match for Besta shelving cannot support books if the shelves are used as a library. Their poor strength comes from tiny supports at their four corners, and the fact their material (particle board) is not suited for books. Strongly suggest offering a stronger shelf material that won't bend from the weight of books. Also, improve the four corner support pins.3

Design flawAngelaI used Ikea's design planner to create a Besta TV unit where one section has an open shelf on top and drawer on the bottom (btw it was one of their pre-planned layouts). This is the shelf they provided and it leaves a gap in the front so things can fall into the drawer. I'm kind of upset about this design flaw. Their TV bench has negative reviews about the quality so I decided to create my own. I like the quality of what I have so I guess that outweighs how upset I am about this gap.4
One Annoying thing Ikea didJeffery The shelving installed without a hitch but for some reason they decided to place a bar code sticker directly on the glass, and label is paper so it's impossible to remove without leaving residue. 2

Material

What is glass?

Glass is mainly made of sand, soda, and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.
