Live LAGOM: Living LAGOM with Juliette

09 January 2017

You don't have to make dramatic changes to improve the wellbeing of yourself, the quality of your life, and ultimately, your world. As our Lagomer Juliette found out, the little things can have a big impact too.

"Growing our own food has made us more conscious of what we eat. It's easier to make healthy choices"

What does Lagom mean? Lagom comes from the Swedish phrase “Lagom är bäst” (the right amount is best), which we believe is the secret to sustainable living.

A more sustainable life at home should be easy. It should make everyday life better and your home more beautiful. And it should be affordable enough so that we can all start right away. We know it’s possible and we want to prove it. That’s what the Live LAGOM project is all about.

Before Juliette joined the Live LAGOM project, she thought her family did ok. "We turned off lights and computers when not in use and recycled wherever possible. But Live LAGOM is so much more!"

"My favourite product is the hydroponics kit. It's all about growing in your house, which means that we can grow lettuce the whole year through. I can't wait to see what happens during the winter months as I will still be picking leaves when there is snow on the ground."

You don't need a garden to grow your own. It's easy to grow fresh herbs and salad indoors.

Start by planting your seeds in the nursery. Put the lid on the nursery and place it in a spot with plenty of light. But avoid direct sunlight. If light is low in winter, add a cultivation light.

After 5 to 14 days, depending on your choice of seeds, two seed leaves should appear. They're now ready to move to the cultivation pots. Place all replanted seedlings in the cultivation tray. Make sure your plants get enough light, either from the sun, from a cultivation light, or a mix of both.

After 5 to 7 weeks, herbs can be pinched and added to food for flavour. Fresh vegetables or salad leaves can be harvested and combined with other ingredients to create healthy, tasty meals.

"I love that I can just pull off a few leaves for my lunch. Home-grown, nutritious, full of vitamins - brilliant!"
