A gift from nature, shaped and bent for optimal beauty and comfort. The sturdy table and chair frames are made of hardwearing bamboo and the handwoven paper twine gives a strong seat with a resilient feel.
The angled back of the chair, as well as generously sized and curved seat/back offer restful support and comfort while eating, writing, or doing paperwork.
The chair is made of strong handwoven paper twine and durable bamboo from more sustainable sources, adding warmth and natural beauty wherever you choose to use it.
Paper twine weaving technique has been used for years in furniture making and is known for its great strength as well as the supportive, flexible feeling when you sit in it.
You can comfortably seat people at the shorter sides of the table as there are no legs that get in the way.
The smooth bamboo surface is easy to wipe clean and care for.
Recommended for indoor use only.
Bamboo is a natural fiber that might change color over time.
To prevent surface scratches and the sound of chair legs scraping on the floor, add FIXA self-adhesive floor protectors, sold separately.
Did you know that bamboo is actually a grass? After growing for some years, it becomes as hard as wood and at the same time stronger and more flexible than most types of wood. It’s also fast-growing and renewable. So, we headed out on a creative excursion to investigate the unique qualities of bamboo and to find out how to make the most out of it rather than copying wood. VOXLÖV dining table and chair is the first result.
Designer Francis Cayouette joined our bamboo trip from the start and made some new discoveries. “When we use bamboo wisely, according to its natural qualities, we can design shapes that are difficult to achieve with other materials.”
Bending shapes with flexible bamboo
Francis and the team used bamboo slats – thin layers of bamboo glued together in different dimensions. Thanks to the long fiber, bamboo is more flexible and easier to bend than most wood. “We explored different techniques to bend the bamboo and let the shapes become a part of the expression.” One challenge was to achieve just the right angle where the seat and backrest meet – with enough tilt and flexibility so that you can enjoy long meals at the dining table. “Bamboo behaves differently than wood, that was something we had to learn – and understand how to utilize. And, since the material is so hard, we could make the edge of the table really thin.”
A chair to linger in
Francis wanted the chair to feel strong and at the same time light and ”transparent”. “We tried with natural fiber on the seat and the backrest, but it made the chair look like a piece of outdoor furniture. Instead, we wove paper cords by hand to get a built-in elasticity. It’s strong and has been used for years in furniture making.” The result is a chair just as flexible and soft as swaying bamboo – a comfortable place where good moments last longer.
Bamboo belongs to the grass family and is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. It absorbs more carbon dioxide than most tree species, while producing almost twice as much oxygen. Bamboo used for furniture is harvested after 3-6 years when it has attained its strong wood character, and the roots are preserved to grow new plants. The areal productivity is very high and the root system protects slopes and river banks from erosion.
