At IKEA, we have experience of furniture in flat packages and smart production, so it was a question about combining our different skills,” says Kristin. Every part is handmade, but the holes in the frame are made by machines to always end up in the same place – otherwise, the chair would be difficult to assemble. “It’s a mix of machine-made and handmade – the best of two worlds."

Comfortable, but finish isn't perfectInaThis chair is comfortable, looks good (despite the visible metal parts), but the wood isn't smooth enough. I would lightly sand it with a sanding paper.
nice, comfortable chairJodinice specialty chair, actually comfortable. think it should COME with the cushion, it is a must. The wrap on the arms were a bit rough, took a piece of fine sand paper to it, did the trick. They were sold out of cusion at time of purchase, so Had to order and pay shipping, as I live too far away to drive back.
comfy & currentGabrielleHad our chair delivered yesterday and put it together in about a half hour with my partner and toddler. An impromptu dad nap was taken in the chair later that afternoon. It is very comfortable in our adult opinions (we’re approximately 5’7” and 5’10”, 140-160 lbs), and our kiddo loves it so much that she’s been claiming it for herself. The shape of the chair cradles us nicely. I can even share it and lounge comfortably with my little one. Due to its light weight and ability to be disassembled, it is easy to move around and be adaptable seating; perfect for our more minimalist home. The rattan isn’t perfectly golden-yellow all over, but we don’t mind due to the functionality and comfort.

Rattan furniture is perfect when you want a warm and welcoming feel at home. However, they are often sold pre-assembled and can be difficult to transport. But it doesn’t have to be like that! Together with one of our suppliers, we’ve created SALNÖ – a curvy rattan armchair that fits in a flat package.
“Maybe you’ve seen pictures of how rattan furniture is usually packed and transported – high and bulky stacks. It’s also furniture that is difficult for customers to take home. We wanted to find a more efficient solution without losing the handicraft that traditional rattan furniture stands for,” says Kristin Pfannenschmidt, product developer.

“By combining different production methods, we can sell SALNÖ in a flat package,” tells Kristin. It saves space on the pallets when we transport the armchair and makes it easier for customers to bring it home in the car or on the bus. “Easier handling than ordinary rattan furniture – all the way from the artisans to the homes of the many people. It means customers will have to assemble SALNÖ themselves, but when they do, I hope they can find some joy in that they also contribute to more efficient transports and the preservation of handicraft traditions in Indonesia,” smiles Kristin.

What is rattan?
Rattan is a strong yet lightweight and flexible material made from the rattan plant’s stem. It can be used both whole and split into thinner materials that are braided into things like furniture and baskets. Rattan belongs to the palm family and climbs along trees, though no trees are required to be felled when the rattan cane is harvested. Since it is a natural material and the products are often handmade by skilled craftspeople, each object gets a completely unique look.
