One week and base has come apartFairy L.I have plenty of ikea furniture but this one is a disgrace. My daughter sleeps on it and it came apart after 2 weeks of sleeping on it1
Held up sorta ok over >20 years, thanks to the mattress height optionMartin F.Bought the low Malm in King size over 20 years ago when we added on to our home. It looks good. We already had a box spring and mattress so we used those without the slats. I installed the rails in the lower position, but after maybe 10 years the screws holding one of the side rails in position popped out of the particle board. I reinstalled them in the higher position shown on Step 8 of the assembly instructions, where they have held since. My actual biggest complaint is that I have stubbed a toe or cracked a shin on the sharp corners a dozen times, and it hurts like hell. I'm clumsy though, so take that with a grain of salt. This thing is heavy and solid. We haven't heard a single noise out of it. Maybe the occasional single pop when we're moving it, but it's totally quiet otherwise. Might be because I didn't use the slats.3
Settled and dislike itVeronica Z.My husband and I shopped for this bed together. He didn’t like the ones I did, and I was not too fond of the ones he liked, but we agreed to disagree on the Malm. I dislike this bed frame because it marks easily. I dislike it because no matter the height setting for the mattress, it pinched the thighs getting out of bed (between the frame and mattress). I didn’t like it because it had more support assembly parts than our King-sized Nasttun frame. I dislike it because it is difficult to disassemble when you want to move it to another room or in a military move. (Specifically the large cam locks. They are a pain to undo.) And I disliked it because the frame felt too blocky. This frame is just not for me. Did it work? Yes. We had multiple guests stay on it without complaint. Is it a good value? Yes. Would I buy it again? No.3
Slatssunasia p.While for the first few months of sleeping on this bed frame everything was good and then all the slats started to fall through and break. The support beams underneath the center beam have curved and are about to break themselves. It is also hard to find replacement parts for the frame also.2
GreatSteven H.I think the product is great5
Fell apartIrene K.Just bought this last year and it fell apart. So upset!!1
Bed will eventually attempt to kill you in your sleep.Zach K.Poor quality overall. The slats will make random noises. There is nothing you can do to stop the slats from sliding and slipping out. Your mattress will randomly collapse. This morning I awoke to the mattress falling because the slats had slipped again. Multiple slats broke transforming into wooden spikes and then center-beam wall mount also warped causing center-beam to fall. I am unharmed by pure luck. Do not purchase this bed unless you enjoy your slats and then mattress randomly falling as you sleep.1
Poor QualityZach K.The bed is nice looking but poor quality. Very soon after purchase the slats will start to come off of their straps. They will make random noises. They will eventually slip and fall off. You will realize this the first time your mattress starts sagging through them or you become a human taco. if you buy, you must lift up your mattress and check position of slats before each use. This morning (8/28/23) I made the mistake of not checking, the slats slipped, as usual. The mattress slipped through and multiple slats broke, followed by the mount for the center-beam breaking. There is a non-zero chance your bed will attempt to murder you in your sleep with these wooden stakes. Purchase at your own risk.1
Changed for the worseNora J.I've been buying Malm beds for nearly 20 years. I liked the low price, their clean design, ease of assembly, and sturdiness. When I heard they'd changed the Malm designs, I decided to "upgrade" to one with underbed storage. The new Malm beds are not good. They cost much more, but feel flimsy; mine is less than a year old but it creaks, squeaks, and I hear cracking sounds sometimes. It was VERY hard to put together -- some of the screws just didn't fit the parts they were supposed to. The new parts seemed more cheaply made and breakable. Also I got the Luroy slats, and they elevate the mattress so high that bedsheets will not stay tucked. I've had this bed less than a year and I'm already looking for a replacement.1
Do not buy this bed 10 years later reviewMichelle L.I owned this bed for 10 years. I would have replaced it sooner but always waited because I thought I would move. After years of sleeping on a constant collapsing and sloping bed my back really hurts. I am surprised that they still sell this bed considering what terrible design it is. Maybe it would be ok if you had a spring mattress but do not try this frame if you are using memory foam or air. First you will need to buy slats. It wasn’t clear when I bought the frame that I would need slats so that was an added expense. While you are sleeping the slats constantly fall out of the frame your bed falls through and the mattress slants and slopes. It’s a near daily thing. The middle bar is higher than the slats so it lifts the middle while the sides slope down and the middle bar creates a hard elevated bump. Over the years I replaced the slats but regardless the bed is all uneven despite new slats with one side sloping so you would roll off. wood peels off, black color chips off.1
Okay Bed for the Short TermAlyssa K.We got this bed a couple of years ago, and it was a pain to put together. We liked the option to use drawers underneath, but they ended up being a bit annoying because you can't have a nightstand and easily access the drawers. We moved with it wrapped up and it did not hold up well. It was much less sturdy when we put it back together. Overall, it's a fine bed if you are good at putting things together and don't intend on moving.3
Literally impossible to screw in bed support framesJonathan B.Product is fine, but it's literally impossible to screw in the bed support frames. The starter holes are too shallow, and when the screw reaches the end of the hole, the wood is too strong to drill any further. No matter how much pressure you apply, you will simply strip the screw heads, thus rendering them useless. To solve this you need to drill the starter holes further in. Hopefully you have a powerdrill with a drillhead. It's a ridiculous oversight that Ikea just left the holes too shallow. I don't understand how this got past their testing, because if you follow the instructions you will strip the screwheads apart. If they literally just made the holes a centimeter deeper, just one centimeter, this would've been avoided. Only buy this product if you have a power drill to deepen the screw holes. You'll probably still have to order 16 new screws after you strip the screwheads.1
Beautiful and sturdy.ClaudiaBeautiful and sturdy.5
Queen BedCaitlyn K.I bought this bed a year ago and during that year I had to support the bed with L brackets to keep the headboard and footboard from leaning. When I moved and had the bed taken apart and reassembled the headboard and footboard would not go back into the correct spot causing my bed to squeak with any movement. Very disappointed that I will have to replace.3

King bedIlianaLove it!!!! Perfect for me and a bed full of kids5
LizElizaWonderful bed and is very comfortable. Can be a bit tricky to assemble without a friend and to align the pieces together. It’s a little fiddly assemble the “metal wheels” for the wood anchors securing the four wood joints and the four middle cross bar bits. I watched a few YouTube videos for tips and tricks which helped me tremendously.5
10/10 RecommendAmaurys S.Give it all the stars. Took my girl to pound town daily and it hasn’t broken. It’s even been taken apart and rebuilt a couple times. Worth it.5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

What is veneer?

A veneer is a thin wooden sheet attached to things like particleboard to add a durable surface and a natural wood look – so we enjoy the many benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common veneer types are birch, ash, oak, and beech, and we’ve made a special UV lacquer that helps preserve the wood's natural structure. A benefit with a slightly thicker veneer is how you can repair and sand the surface if it’s damaged to give furniture a longer and more beautiful life.
