Easy to Build, but Wobbles Side-to-SideChristopherThe Kallax 5-by-5 was the largest yet easiest IKEA piece I've assembled. The quality is mediocre, but reasonable for the size and convenience. I placed it against the wall, only to find the anchoring mechanism doesn't account for the baseboard, so am unable to use the hardware. This is critical because it's what keeps the piece from wobbling side-to-side. I'm not returning it because the boxes didn't survive opening due to the strength of the glue used (not a complaint; all pieces were undamaged). I would love this if it didn't wobble side-to-side and it's only going to get worse over time. I'd suggest keeping the top and bottom shelves exactly as-is, but updating the horizonal shelves to accept screws from the outside of the vertical sides. Otherwise, the screws for the top and bottom should be 5 times longer with larger threads to eliminate the wobble. It looks great but it's not stable. I don't feel comfortable putting 29 lbs on each shelf, especially the top two rows. Just okay.3
Great for Board Game and MTG StorageScottEasy to assemble and excellent for board game storage and display. The KALLAX is sturdy, versatile, and looks great. The drawer inserts were also easy to put together and install, and they work exceptionally well for storing MTG cards and accessories. Very happy with the setup.5
Love this shelf!MaryThese shelves are perfect for my small space. The construction was a bit more demanding due to the weight of the finished unit, but it was definitely worth it.5
Not for small placesMichelleThe 5x5 kallax was way too big for our place, returned it for a smaller one. I really wish the depth was a bit smaller, it sticks out so much.5
Love this bookcase -- have 3!NancyThis style of bookcase works so well in our house that we've bought three of them. With the latest purchase, we also got some of the containers that fit in the cubbies for things we didn't want to be visible. I find these shelves to be very versatile since they are offered in different sizes and colors.5
It’s perfectReneeLove this shelving I almost went with a smaller one and I’m so glad that I went with the bigger one. It’s perfect.5
Good storage unitRobertThis well-made storage shelf ststem is a good pantry unit.4
Fill the ShelvesKathleenI really love this size of the KALLAX shelf unit. I used to get the smaller one, but this is just as easy to put together and doesn’t take up that much more room. I would advise using the brackets to secure it to the wall or put it somewhere where it could not topple over …earthquake or curious climbers.5
Love, love, loveVickiWorks great in the sewing room.5
Wonderful ProductClaudiaVery easy to assemble. All the pieces were in the box and the instructions were amazingly easy.5
Good design, poor qualityDamienThe design is nice, but the 'oak effect' is misleading—it isn’t even a veneer, it’s just paper! During assembly, one of the adhesive bumpers got stuck to a shelf. When I tried to remove it gently, it ripped the paper finish right off...!! Afraid the shelves will be damaged very easily.3
Still goodKevinThere seems to be a newer finish (same color, but more .. plasticky) on these units, but if you can get them on sale they are a very good value & fit lots of stuff well. Billy system is nicer-looking, by far, but is better suited to books & ephemera; Kallax is deep (think: two-rows of books deep), and less good for library storage. But for general storage, esp with bins and drawer/cabinet inserts, Kallax is ideal.5
Sturdy - NeatRachelworks well and keeps house neat and clean. It is very well built and holds a lot of weight.5
The best for a craft room!ElizabethMoved into a new (for us) home, so enjoying building my crafting space from scratch. This unit makes it easy!!!5
Exactly filled my vision for the space we createdNancyAt our second home, we built a room addition. We (I) thought long and hard on how I wanted the space to evolve as we filled it with furniture. The main function of this room is a studio for my quilting and mixed media art. The 2 kallax pieces we purchased was the first items to go into the room. It’s still a work in progress on the organization of the items stored on this units. So far so good!5
Missing hardware and manualSamanthaOrder arrived and after opening all the boxes, I noticed that the hardware and manual were missing. Not only did I purchase the shelf, I purchased hundreds of dollars worth of additional inserts - very disappointing to spend this kind of money and have missing parts. I understand there’s a way to order “missing” hardware, but you’d still need to review the manual to know how many of each hardware piece you’d need. The closest IKEA is over an hour from me. This is inconvenient and poor quality control. Do better when packaging orders and ensure there’s nothing missing. This isn’t the first time this has happened, since there are plenty of reviews, Reddit posts, and complaints. Please do something about this.1
