Reviews

PerfectHeatherWe've recently moved into an incredibly small apartment. The kitchen hardly has any cupboard space at all and we were seriously lacking space for our food. The little "pantry" they gave us now holds our plastics and appliances. We didn't have any counter space for our microwave, toaster, or toaster oven. Not to mention the lack of space for our dry goods. We bought this and two of the 2x6 kallax shelves to put on either side of it. Now we have all the room we need, plus the top of this for our three appliances we use often. It has plenty of space for stacking cans and keeping cereal boxes. We love our shelves.5
There was a dent on the side.DebraThe dent is next to the wall so we didn’t return it.3
Perfect Record StorageOrlandoFor storing my record collection these are perfect5
SturdyLauryEasy to assemble and very sturdy.5
Really like these!EllenI have a number of these bookshelves in my home. I put two 4x2s with a 3x3 to use as a TV wall unit. You basically end up with an expensive built in look without the expensive price,5
Great option for a small spaceJennifer L.Great storage option! Although when the product arrived there was some damage. Arranged it to hide this.5
White looks BetterRegeniaThe black version of the Kallax had some scratches on it and didn’t look as nice as the white versions we have had for years. Not sure it is worth the extra charge as well for the black color. Used in my son’s college dorm room4
It’s cheap and fell apartKimberly S.The screws came out! The dowels snapped and I am out the money1
Very nice!RalphEasy to build.5

Difficult assemblySeanThere were several holes that were not drilled deep enough to fit wooden tenons into. Required heavy pressure to make items fit, which resulted in damaging product.3
Lesser quality than previous yearsDaleFor anyone who has bought these over the years, you can immediately tell that the quality has gone down significantly from years past. Most of the wood is now semi-hollow and made of particle board basically. If you tighten a screw too much, it can easily break loose - the wood fails long before there is any chance of hurting the screw. These obviously still work, and provide what I need, but I do not expect my recent purchase of these to last as long as my older purchases of the same item.3
Good for organizingJeanThis is the second time I bought this unit. My son liked mine so much he wanted one for his bedroom storage.5
Holes wrong sizeMaryThe predrilled holes all seemed to be the wrong size. We broke 2 wooden dowels trying to fit them in the holes before we decided to return it. So the halves of the wooden dowels are just permanently stuck in there. And we had to keep pounding on them because when we put the little shelves into the big shelves, they wouldn’t sit flush against the big shelves because the dowels were sticking out too far. So I’m going to get the Better Homes and Gardens version I stead which I had a far easier time putting together. The instructions make more sense on BHG too.1
Highly recommendLSturdy and attractive! I was able to customize it to perfectly fit my needs. Very happy with my Kallax!5

KALLAX SHELVESMaryI bought two of the 3 X 3 KALLAX Shelves and I think they look great. The shelves are functional and since I bought white, I think they look cheerful in my room. I have to admit I had Task Rabbit put them together for me.5
Kallax storage cubesRichardEasy to put together and looks nice. Wish IKEA sold sturdy, quality cubes with tight covers to go in the Kallax.4

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Quality

Quality and feel

At first glance, KALLAX is a simple shelving unit, but it’s based on a love for details. The unit has smooth surfaces and rounded edges that make it appealing to the eye and enjoyable to touch. We’ve also worked hard to make the shelves align perfectly so you avoid eye-sore gaps, giving the unit a uniform look. Simply put, all of KALLAX is well-thought-out down to the smallest detail and exudes a solid feel of quality – which results in a nicer and more timeless impression.
