Shelves got smaller!PATRICIAI bought these to add to an existing walk in pantry I was updating. To my dismay these shelves were not as deep as the old ones. Luckily they still fit with the supports and honestly, the new size fit better one wall. So, with a little juggling I rearranged all the shelves. I wish there was a better way to change the height of a shelf without accessing it from the back. Once you choose a height and load it, it’s a big job to change it up.4

Hejne ShelvesErikaThe shelves went together pretty easily which was nice. They are a little wobbly though. Ikea did not send us the cross bars that go on the back to help stabilize it. It has been two weeks and we have still not received them3
shelf for shelving unitJoelleThe design seems to have a flaw. The two boards on the outside sides do not go to the edge. They are inset. Yet the HEJNE posts are predrilled with two holes side by side. The shelf design only allows you to attach to the posts via 1 screw, which isn't very sturdy. If the outer boards went to the edge and had another hole drilled, you could use both holes in the posts and have a sturdy shelving unit. As it is, it has to come with steel rod cross pieces that attach to the back to prevent it from collapsing on itself.2

I wasn't able to build inside of pantry closet and same not able to built outside and put in. but install with different custom style. fits perfect. Love them both worth for trip two times to go to Ikea which is 200 miles. and price is really good too. highly recommended.5

The screw holes are too smallBlondeBomberThe screw holes are too small on over half of the shelves I bought, I had to get out a drill and enlarge them. While it’s not an expensive item, and I was able to fix it myself, I find it annoying there is such poor quality control. Ugh.3

Story

Sturdy storage from solid wood

At IKEA, we work hard to keep prices down. One way is reducing the number of production steps. This helped making HEJNE shelves an affordable buy. As much of the production as possible is done right where the timber is felled. But keeping prices low is one thing. The real trick is to be sustainably minded, too. In the case of HEJNE, it was easy. What helps make the shelves more affordable, also makes them more sustainable.

The key is to use more parts of each tree and to cut transportation costs by producing where the tree is sourced.

Sourced from sustainable forests

"The first part is harvesting the timber from responsibly managed forests, and then it’s on to the sawmill," says Jesper Gunnerling who helped source the wood. The outer sections of the log are what we use to make HEJNE. The price for these parts is lower, without losing the benefits of solid wood. "There's no difference at all in strength," Jesper says. "But furniture makers don't always use this type of wood because it has these natural markings in the timber where branches have come out from the trunk."

Solid timber is so strong that each HEJNE unit can be used to store heavy loads, like a garage worth of tools. There's no paint or extra fittings, just practical and strong solid wood shelves to make sturdy, unpretentious storage, ready for years of service around the home. That’s likeable, don’t you think?
