Assembly process NickFirst of all, the piece looks great and feels pretty sturdy. The assembly process is extremely difficult and frustrating. All of the main pieces are held together by plastic pins/dowels that must be locked together with such force it feels as though the piece will break. If you don’t have everything perfectly lined up it will not go together. Heaven forbid you ever have to disassemble it. I am no stranger to furniture building. This process is unnecessarily hard.
GoodMelindaOkay...I have put together a lot of ikea furniture. This was challenging because you have to put multiple pieces in a large hole then slide all three into the smaller hole. This all has to be done 100% correctly or the back piece will not slide in. After multiple tries I just said, screw the back paneling that no one can see. I didn't want to break anything and ruin the piece. With this being said, I love the look of this bench. I was looking for a good long bench that we could sit on and hide shoes without the look of baskets. I wish the drawers came out farther but, overall the piece looks good in the space.
Not sturdyAnonymous reviewerI really love the look of this bench, and assembly was straightforward. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t perform the way I expected. It cannot support the weight of a 200-lb adult sitting in the center and there’s noticeably inadequate support and too much flex. For something marketed as a bench, I expected it to be sturdy enough to sit on while putting on shoes (as advertised).

Poor DesignJohnI've built my fair share of Ikea over the past decade--this is one of the worst-designed pieces I have ever built.
The failure is the "push and slide" fasteners that attach the most important components of the bench (bottom to the sides, sides to the top, sides of the drawers to the front). They require a mix of brute force and extreme precision to get seated correctly. As you force one piece into position it will often unseat another.
Ultimately I was unable to get the bench top seated far enough back to fit the rear panel. The mismatch is so bad that I suspect there's a defect in the manufacturing.
The piece still came together, it looks good and will function adequately. But I'd avoid this until Ikea sorts out the QC or the fastener system better.
