Proud Army MomMiriamI bought a Borrby lantern at IKEA to display while my son was at Army basic training. The "Forge" is a grueling, 96-hour, cumulative training exercise whose successful completion determines that a trainee is declared a US Soldier. It has become a tradition that families display a Forge lantern as a show of support for their trainee during the Forge. It symbolizes guiding them back home and is a reminder to pray for them. I decorated the glass of the Borrby lantern with my son’s name, rank, training location and Army symbols and phrases. I wanted to use a real candle and not an LED, so I displayed it outside, hanging at our front porch where I normally have a hanging flower basket. At the time my son’s unit stepped off for the Forge, I lit the candle. A storm was approaching and I had just enough time to take a video of how beautiful the lantern looked at our front porch with our US flag. Afterward, I decided to take down the flag so that it would not blow against the lantern or damage the porch support to which the flag was mounted since the wind was becoming so strong. Several times through the night I woke up because of the storm and I got up to look outside. It was so encouraging to see that the candle remained lit despite being out in the storm. It stayed lit the entire 4 days and then the candle burned itself out shortly after he completed the Forge! I have loved the way the lantern looks in front of our home. My son would like to keep the lantern decorated, so I bought a replacement Borrby lantern to display outside and received another for my birthday so that I have one hanging on the other side of the porch as well. Although I’ll never keep candles lit in them for such an extended period of time again, I plan to light candles in them for Christmas Eve and other special occasions.
I used substantial screw hooks, black chain and black carabiner clips to hang the lanterns. They are quite heavy, especially with a block candle and the screw hook is drilled into wood.5
