Perfect timingJillianI have been looking at the Alex cabinet for a while. When the San Diego location started offering their 'AS IS' selections I checked to see what their offerings were and there was an Alex with an open box. I reserved it and picked it up the next day. It's a great cabinet! It was fairly easy to put together and extremely sturdy. I plan to purchase a second one soon.5
Easy to put together.HelenIt is as easy to put together, nice and sturdy. Looks nice.5
Great Product, would definitely purchaseNicholasGreat Product, would definitely purchase it again and recommend in family and friends.5
AcceptableNohemiThe drawer organizer offers a large drawer that allows for the storage of larger items. The drawback is the drawer is hard to open when you have a carpeted floor. The drawer is also made of compressed wood, which is acceptable, but remember not to press too hard when assembling as the drawer sides may crack.3
Not for use in carpeted rooms!Jeff H.We purchased 3 of these and 2 of the five drawer ALEX pieces and created desks with them. Once everything was assembled and arranged it was immediately evident that the bottom drawer will not open or is extremely difficult to open in higher pile carpet. The bottom of these is not a solid piece like the other ALEX cabinets as the bottom drawer has a small wheel on the front to help support the weight of the drawer as it is opened (they should make these the same as the other ALEX drawers but with better sliding rails instead of the cheap wheel). This wheel catches in carpet and makes the bottom cabinet useless. It would have been exceptionally helpful if this was clearly described in the description or in photos of the product. Now I have $450 in cabinets that I've assembled and I have to spend more time and money to try to modify them so they can be used as intended. 2 stars for simply not properly describing the product and a very poor/cheap design of the bottom drawer in my opinion.2
Little workhorseLaurenLove these cabinets with drawers. Very sturdy once assembled and the drawers work!5
Wrong colorKatherine B.I wish this came in the gray-turquoise color. I’d like a file drawer that matches the other furniture in this collection, but it’s not an option.1
Great to haveRITTAI built a desk and these are great to have5

Filing cabinetJimNice looking, just concerned about quality, made of particle board5
Great file drawerKathiEasy to assemble, 45 min for one person.5
AlexLawranceI've noticed as of late, that IKEA fit and finish quality is lacking. Your quality control inspection team needs to look a little closer at products like the ALEX for flaws in milling and drilled holes and alignment. Could be machinery needs better maintenance and more frequent inspection.3
DYI computer deskJennaI love the draws. My only comment is that it doesn’t fit normal size files from staples. I think I might have to buy ikea folders to fit perfectly. But overall I love my DYI desk.5
Great CabinetMARTAThis works very well.5
Nice!KarenThere are 3 small drawers and one big drawer. I wish the 3 small drawers were a little deeper, by only having two drawers instead of three3
Alex is almost perfectClaudiaLove these drawers! Easy to put together, look great, and excellent for storing files, papers and office supplies. I wish they made the drawers without the open hand-holds so I could put pretty drawer pulls on them, but other than that, they are great. I purchased 4, put casters on them, placed them under a butcher block desk-top, placed a Kalax units on each side, then a Kalax unit horizontally on top. My desk is amazing and I love it!5
nice cabinet, took quite awhileROGERnice cabinet, took quite awhile to put together A bit pricey for what you get. Works fine in my office situation4
Well built for the value.JosephWell built for the value. Prefer is the drawers lined up better when closed. Using 2 to support large deck top.3
This is the 3rd unitLenThis is the 3rd unit I have purchased- making a custom computer work station5
Perfect for DIY Built in office lookJenniferI'm using this to create a built in look for my office and it's working perfectly.5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.
