How do I take measurements of my kitchen?
When planning a kitchen, every inch counts. We offer written guides to make it quick and easy to take the kitchen measurements yourself. In case you are not able to take the measurements yourself, we can support you with our kitchen measurements service.
- Preparations before you begin measuring your kitchen
- Complete all necessary major work: Ensure all major building work is finished. This includes removing or building walls and applying plasterboard to all walls and ceilings.
- Finalize utility positions: Your plumbing, gas, and electrical connections must be in the final positions they will occupy in your new kitchen.
- Gather your tools: You will need a tape or laser measure, a pencil, and paper or a notebook to record your findings. If you prefer to record the measurements digitally and you have suitable equipment available, use these instead.
- Taking the measurements of your kitchen
- Room dimensions: Measure the width, wall length, and ceiling height. On each wall, mark the exact locations and dimensions of connections for electricity, water, gas, and vents. Also, measure and mark the locations of any obstacles like radiators, pole supports, columns, or chimneys.
- Windows: For each window, measure its dimensions, the distance from the floor to the bottom of the window, and the window frame dimensions. Remember to measure the space needed to fully open each window.
- Doors: For each door, measure its dimensions, the distance from the floor to the bottom of the door, the door's thickness, and the door frame dimensions. Measure the space needed to fully open each door.
- Electrical: For each outlet, measure its distance from the floor and the nearest sidewalls. Note the type of electrical connection (single-phase or three-phase), the amperage, and the number of appliances you plan to connect. Measure and document the location of light switches.
- Vent: Measure the vent's diameter, its distance from the floor (to the bottom of the opening), and its distance from the nearest sidewall (to the start of the opening).
- Water connections: Measure the distance to your water sources from the sidewalls. Measure the distance to the water drain from both the floor and the wall. Note if there are any additional water connections (e.g., for a dishwasher).
- Gas connections: Measure the distance from the floor and the nearest sidewall to the gas connection. Also, measure the diameter of the gas pipe and its distance from the floor and sidewall.
- Ceiling obstacles: Document the position and dimensions of any obstacles, including sloping ceilings.
- How to book the kitchen measurement service online: The easiest way to book is through our online booking tool. You can check availability and select a time that suits you.
- How to book the kitchen measurement service in a store: Visit the kitchen department at any IKEA store, Planning Studio, or Plan and Order Point and a co-worker will be happy to help you book the service.
