Why is my candle sooting and how can I avoid this?

Soot from candles is caused by disturbances in the flame, often caused by draughts, lack of oxygenation or too high candle edges. With the right placement and care, you can reduce the risk of soot.

Soot is a common result of incomplete combustion and can occur with all types of candles when the flame is disturbed. This can happen, for example, if the candle is in draft, placed in a candle holder that does not let in enough air, or if the wick is too long. Even too high edges of a pillar candle can cause the flame to not get proper oxygenation, leading to soot and uneven burning.
If the edges of your pillar candle have become too tall, we recommend carefully cutting them down. In this way, the flame gets the right conditions and the risk of the candle sooting or starting to drip is reduced.
To avoid soot and ensure that the candle burns properly, it is also important to always follow the safety instructions that come with all IKEA candles.
