How does the IKEA kitchen installation service work?

Installing a new kitchen is an exciting journey. To make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, it’s helpful to understand the process from start to finish. This guide explains each step and clarifies what IKEA and our service partners will do, as well as what you need to prepare for a successful installation.

  1. Before you book – Planning for success
Proper preparation is the key to a seamless installation. Before booking the service with your IKEA kitchen specialist, you should consider the following:
  • Measure and plan: A successful installation begins with careful planning. Save time and costs by measuring your kitchen space yourself. If you’re not used to taking kitchen measurements, we recommend starting by watching our video instructions on how to measure a kitchen. If you are unable or prefer not to measure yourself, you can book our professional measuring service. Once your measurements are ready, it’s time to book a planning appointment with one of our kitchen specialists so we can help you create your dream kitchen design and discuss the installation in more detail.
  • Prepare your space: The room must be ready before installation, so we recommend planning any building work at an early stage and asking for clear instructions on what needs to be completed before the installation date. Empty the kitchen and remove and dispose of it unless you have booked this service through our service partner. If you have an existing kitchen and have not chosen the removal and disposal service, your old kitchen must already be taken out. Make sure to create as much space as possible before delivery and installation.
  • Obtain permissions:It is your responsibility to ensure that all relevant building permits or other official approvals required for your project are in place.
  • Consider additional services: Think about whether you will need help with other parts of the project. We offer separate services that can be booked along with your installation, such as a kitchen removal service for your current kitchen.

  1. Booking and managing your service
  • Booking your service: Installation can only be booked through an IKEA kitchen specialist during your planning appointment. During the appointment, you can go through the installation process together and ensure that a pre‑installation inspection is scheduled.
  • Rescheduling or cancelling: If your plans change, you can reschedule or cancel your installation. To avoid any charges, you must contact IKEA Customer Service at least 48 hours before the scheduled installation. Please note that if you cancel less than 48 hours before the booked time, or if you are not present when the installer arrives, you will be charged a fee for the installer’s lost working time. Contact our Customer Service as soon as possible if you are considering rescheduling or cancelling your kitchen installation.

  1. The Pre-Installation Visit – Confirming the details
  • Once your kitchen has been fully planned and you feel ready to place your order, the next step is to book a pre‑installation inspection. This inspection is an important check to ensure that your kitchen design works optimally in your space.

After the inspection has been completed, you will receive a clear quotation from our service partner. The quotation includes the planned start date for the installation as well as any recommended adjustments. These adjustments will also be shared with IKEA.

If you choose to proceed with the installation, the cost of the pre‑installation inspection will be deducted from the final invoice, which will be issued directly by our service partner.

During the pre‑installation visit, our service partner will:
  • Check and verify: The installer will check the room’s measurements and conditions against the kitchen design you have approved.
  • Discuss supplementary work: If any work is needed that falls outside the scope of our service (for example, minor plumbing adjustments, electrical work, or removal of an existing kitchen), the installer will identify this. Make sure that any supplementary work can be completed well before the kitchen installation will take place to prevent any delays in the process.
  • Finalise the plan: The installer will discuss the project timeline with you and make any necessary final adjustments to the plan.

Your responsibilities during the visit:
  • Be present and available: Ensure you are at home for the Pre-Installation Visit to discuss the plan and any potential issues with the installer.
  • Receive the quotation and approve any additional work: After the pre‑installation inspection, you will receive a detailed quotation outlining the cost of installing your kitchen and what is included in the installation. We recommend reviewing the quotation together with our service partner before signing the agreement, to ensure you are both clear on what is included and what may involve additional costs. If any additional work is required, you will need to approve this work in writing before it begins. If you are eligible for the ROT tax deduction, you may receive up to a 30% reduction on labour costs. For more information, please visit the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).
  1. During the installation – Bringing your kitchen to life
This is when your dream kitchen becomes a reality. How long your kitchen installation takes will largely depend on the conditions on site and the scope of your kitchen renovation.
Before the installer arrives, please:
  • Check your delivery: When your IKEA kitchen products arrive, it is your responsibility to check that all boxes, worktops and appliances have been delivered correctly and without any damages. Any damaged or missing items that are not discovered before the planned installation date could create a delay in the installation process, so make sure you contact IKEA customer service as soon as possible when you find that items are missing or damaged.
  • Store your products: Place all flat‑pack boxes and appliances in the room where the kitchen will be installed, or in an adjacent room, so they are ready for the installer.
What the installer does during the installation:
  • Kitchen removal (Optional, not included as standard): Removal and disposal of your old kitchen (optional, not included as standard). If you have chosen this service, the installer will dismantle and remove your old kitchen on the first day, before work on the new kitchen begins.
  • Installation: The installer will carry out all work included in the service — from assembling cabinets to fitting worktops and installing your appliances.
  • Maintain a clean workspace: The installer will practice clean work habits and try to keep dust and disruption to a minimum.
Your responsibilities during the installation:
  • Provide clear access: Ensure the installer has clear, safe, and uninterrupted access to the work area.
  • Provide facilities: You must provide adequate power, lighting, and heating for the installer to work safely and effectively.
  • Protect your home: While our installers are careful, you should take steps to protect your belongings by moving fragile items and covering furniture and floors in adjacent areas with dust sheets.
  1. After the Installation – Completion and enjoyment
Once the work is finished, there are a few final steps to complete the process.
What the installer does:
  • Final Clean-up: The installer will sweep the job site.
  • Waste removal: Once the installation is complete, our service partner will take care of all packaging.
Your responsibilities:
  • Final inspection and approval: You will need to inspect the completed work together with the installer. If you are satisfied, you will be asked to sign a final approval document. It is very important to record any issues or comments on this document, as IKEA cannot accept responsibility for damage or issues reported afterwards that were not noted at this stage (with the exception of hidden defects covered by the terms of our product and service guarantees).
  • Keep important documents: Please keep all assembly instructions, user manuals, and any spare parts provided.
  • Enjoy you kitchen: Start creating new memories in your kitchen!
