How do I saw a cover panel without it splintering?
We recommend applying masking tape on both sides of the cut, as the tape reduces the risk of splintering. Use the finest-toothed saw possible.
To cut a cover panel without chipping, here are some tips and techniques:
-
Use the right saw blade: A blade with more and finer teeth (such as a fine-toothed blade) will produce a smoother cut and reduce chipping.
-
Protect the surface with tape: Apply strong masking tape along the cutting line before you start sawing. The tape helps stabilize the fibers and prevents chipping.
-
Cut using the proper method: If you’re using a circular saw or jigsaw, cut from the back side of the panel, as chipping often occurs on the side where the blade exits the material. For a handsaw, cut slowly and with controlled force.
-
Pre-drill corners: If the cut includes corners or angles, pre-drill these before sawing to avoid material chipping at sharp turns.
-
Support the material firmly: Ensure the panel is securely positioned and well-supported during cutting to minimize vibrations that could cause chipping.
