4 levels of cooling bed textiles to stay cool at night

Tossing and turning all night because your bed feels too warm? You’re not alone. Many hot sleepers struggle to get restful sleep at night. Cooling mattresses and pillows help, but the textiles closest to your skin matter most. At IKEA, our cooling bed textiles are designed with four levels of cooling comfort, so you can personalise your sleep environment and enjoy cooler, more restful nights.

Cooling level 1: Breathable fabrics

A fabric that feels smooth against the skin and has good breathability.

Cooling level 2: Temperature-control fibres

Fibre with a temperature-control function absorbs body heat and allows moisture to escape for a comfortable sleep.

Sleep tip:

Experts say the ideal sleep temperature is between 15.6°C and 19.4°C. With Malaysia’s warm nights, that can be tricky. Try breathable fabrics, lightweight pillows, and good ventilation to make bedtime more comfy.

Cooling level 3: Cooling around the head

Cool materials and fibre with a temperature control function lower the temperature around your head for a comfortable sleep.  Cold gel with cool material for a long-lasting cooling effect will give you a comfortable sleep even in hot conditions.

Bonus tips: Block out heat during the day!

Research shows that block-out curtains and shades can reduce heat transfer through windows by up to 24%. Keep them closed while the sun is out to help your bedroom stay cooler for sleep.

Best cooling materials for bed linens

Too warm to sleep? The material is breathable and moisture-absorbing, helping to keep you dry during the night.

Cotton

Highly breathable and moisture-wicking, cotton ensures you stay dry and never wake up feeling clammy.

Lyocell

Lyocell is a naturally cooling material, and the hydrophilic nature of lyocell fiber makes it super absorbent. Lyocell sheets are very effective at wicking away moisture and keeping you comfortable through the night.

Viscose

Natural fiber with post production. It can draw heat away from the body and wicking away moisture and maintains an even temperature, making them ideal for hot sleepers.

Linen

Natural linen is made from fibers of the flax plant that provides linen fabric with unique qualities. One of the many cooling qualities of the linen fabric is a type of weave that allows more airflow. That's exactly what makes linen bed sheets so breathable.

Polyester

Polyester are very good at wicking away sweat to the outside of the sheet from where it can evaporate quickly into the atmosphere. As this process continues, the sheet continues wicking away more sweat. That's why polyester sheets are the best cooling sheets if you're the type to sweat profusely at night.

At IKEA, you’ll find a wide range of cooling bed linens made from these fabrics. Explore our textile guide to see which options suit your sleep style and build your own cooling bed system.
