What is Matter and what does it mean?

Matter is a smart home standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). Matter is a smart home standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). This networking standard allows smart products to communicate with each other.

Matter is the technology behind the DIRIGERA hub, which allows IKEA smart products to be managed via apps and remote controls. The standard aims to ensure compatibility and improve interoperability between different devices and software.
Before the Matter standard, each smart appliance had to run its own app to operate.
The "Matter" standard has made it possible for smart appliances from different companies to interoperate with each other.
For example, when you talk to Amazon's smart speaker, you can control IKEA's smart products through DIRIGERA.
Matter eliminates product barriers and allows for more freedom in choosing smart appliances.
The TRADFLI series uses ZigBee, a network standard for short-range wireless communication.
DIRIGERA hub is a Matter bridge, meaning it can take the Zigbee connected product and act as a bridge into a Matter network. DIRIGERA is also a Matter hub, which means it can control and onboard meta products.
The functionality of DIRIGERA or any of our Zigbee products (lights, air purifiers, blinds, etc.) is independent of Wi-Fi strength because DIRIGERA is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable and the product works with Zigbee.
The only part of the system that requires Wi-Fi is when the app connects to the DIRIGERA and SYMFONISK speakers.
IKEA is fully committed to the Matter standard. Currently, there is Matter support for DIRIGERA hub available to test through "The Workshop", our experimental feature section in the IKEA Home smart app. This "beta" feature is currently only supporting light sources (including drivers). More product types will be added later.
Over time, our entire product range will support Matter via our DIRIGERA hub, which will serve as a Matter bridge.
