Taking care of the home we share

As delivery vehicles are a major contributor to air and noise pollution as well as to congestion in cities, IKEA India has committed to transitioning to zero-emission delivery vehicles.

When we refer to 'zero-emission vehicles’, we are specifically referring to emissions from the tank-to-wheel perspective. This means we are considering only the CO2 emissions generated while the vehicle is in operation, starting from the fuel in the tank and the vehicle's tailpipe emissions. We do not include emissions associated with the production and distribution of the fuel in this context.

Where are we today?

At IKEA, we have committed to source 100% renewable electricity by 2025 across Ingka operations, where today already 77% (FY23) of the electricity we use come from renewable sources. We have committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions in all stages of our value chain.

As a result, Ingka Group – the biggest IKEA franchisee – is aiming to achieve more than 90% of home deliveries made by zero emissions vehicles by 2028 (excluding parcel deliveries). And we are on our way to reaching our goals:

  • Since we started the journey in 2017 at IKEA to have zero-emission deliveries, we have doubled our Electric Vehicle (EV) fleet each year globally, with an exception for FY22.
  • We aim to achieve more than 90% of home deliveries made by zero emissions vehicles by 2028 (excluding parcel deliveries). So far, we have already reached 95.49% truck deliveries  (February`24)
  • 160 EVs are currently on the roads in India

Zero-emissions, what’s our approach?
Our methodology for achieving zero-emission deliveries in India involves:

  • Setting clear and achievable targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions within our delivery fleet.
  • Identifying and adopting technologies and fuels suitable for India's infrastructure.
  • Collaborating closely with local authorities, partners, and communities to create an enabling environment for zero-emission logistics.
  • Regularly monitoring and transparently reporting our progress to ensure accountability.
