Our favourite IVAR cabinet ideas
We’ve seen the world do a lot with IVAR cabinets because it’s a DIY dream. All that untreated, solid pine makes for lots of possibility with paint, stain, drills and screws. We love getting creative with it, too. Check out our favourite ways we’ve used IVAR in the past.
Which idea is your favourite?
A maximised game centre helps organise family fun, especially in the living room. Inside the doors, we attached hooks for headphones, a basket for game controllers and a clipboard for scorekeeping. We even flipped a plywood magazine file and screwed it into the cabinet’s side for tablets.
A custom teen vanity creates a getting ready space beyond the bathroom. We sawed a hole in the doors for a mix of displaying and hiding. Then we painted inside and out for a contrasting pop. Light chains brought in some glam, and an extendable mirror on the side made close-ups easy.
An artsy eye-catcher contains your stuff and makes a big impact, especially when several cabinets cover a wall. We painted a big mural across four IVAR cabinets, and put a rail in one for artwork and paintbrushes. We originally used hangers with clips, but other hangers work too.
A DIY dining cabinet can hold a lot, especially together with children’s wall storage drawers. We painted IVAR blue (and the walls a bit to unify the pieces) and lined the back with newspaper for a vintage feel. Inside the doors, we added hooks and baskets for more storage.
A custom armoire creates a ton of personality and clothes storage. We found this one on a home visit. It’s made with four cabinets on top of two 3-drawer chests (all fixed to the wall). Spray paint and simple templates gave it a fun take on a traditional look.
A secret doll’s house fuses storage and playtime, because clean up’s a snap. Just close the doors when the doll furniture and toys are inside. A hanger made an extra spot to keep toys untangled. Even though the cabinet was secured to the wall, we added flair with a silly sock on a decorative leg!
