My fridge and freezer are making an unusual/weird sound, what is the reason?
Fridge and freezers can sometimes make different noises, usually normal operating noises that ensure the product is working properly. Sometimes, however, the sound may indicate that the freezer needs a manual defrost.
Humming sound
Cause: A brief buzzing sound can be caused by high ambient temperature and when the compressor starts.
Solution: These are normal operating noises from the fan and compressor. The fan ensures that the temperature is correctly distributed, and the compressor ensures that the correct temperature is reached. It is not a technical fault.
Rippling noise
Cause: The rippling noise is caused by the refrigerant in the cooling circuit.
Solution: These are normal operating noises when the refrigerant moves in the pipes. It is not a technical fault.
Clicking sound
Cause: The compressor or some component of the product turns on and off.
Solution: These are normal operating sounds when compressors, thermostats, and other components are switched on and off. It is not a technical fault.
Scraping noise
Cause: Scraping sounds can be caused by excessive condensation in the freezer, causing the fan to refreeze or strike against icicles that have formed. There can be several reasons for the increase in condensation, the most common being that the door has been open for too long or is opened frequently.
Solution: Defrost the freezer manually by following the steps below:
- Turn off the freezer and pull it out if possible. Remember to protect the floor.
- Set up the freezer door. The door must be kept open at all times so that all ice disappears. To ensure that the freezer is completely free of ice build-up (including hidden spaces), defrosting needs to last at least 24 hours.
- Leave the bottom drawer in place to collect any melt water that drips down. Place a long pan or similar on the floor to catch the water and protect the floor by laying out towels.
- Keep an eye on the back of the freezer as there is a risk of water spilling onto the floor if a lot of ice has formed. Empty the plastic container at the back of the freezer if necessary.
- Make sure that the inside of the freezer is completely dry before you start it again.

Read moreOn many modern refrigerators, the condenser, which releases heat, is built into the side walls rather than located at the back. When the refrigerator is operating, heat is transferred from the inside through the pipes in the walls, causing the exterior to become warm. It is therefore completely normal for the sides of your refrigerator/freezer to feel warmer than other parts of the appliance.
