What is Zigbee and what does it mean?

Zigbee is a wireless communication protocol that allows your smart products to communicate with each other in a quickly, securely and energy‑efficiently way. Perfect for the smart home!

Zigbee is a standardised wireless protocol used to connect smart devices in the home – such as lights, sensors, remote controls and hubs. It works in a similar way to Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth, but is specifically designed to be:
  • Energy‑efficient – ideal for battery‑powered devices
  • Stable – devices create a so‑called mesh network that strengthens the signal
  • Secure – communication is encrypted
  • Fast – responds instantly when you switch on a light or activate a scene
In the smart home products from IKEA, Zigbee is used to create a reliable and seamless experience. It also makes it possible to connect our products with other brands that use the same standard – for example through Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa or Google Home.
