What is the difference between KAJPLATS and TRÅDFRI smart lights?

KAJPLATS is based on the new standard Matter, while TRÅDFRI uses Zigbee. Here's what this means in practice - and which series might be best suited to your smart home.

KAJPLATS and TRÅDFRI are two different series of smart lamps from IKEA. Both can be controlled wirelessly, but they use different technologies to talk to your hub and other smart products.
  • KAJPLATS – based on Matter
KAJPLATS uses the Matter standard. Matter is a common "language" for smart home products that makes it easier to use different brands together. With Matter, you can often control your products in several different smart home apps, as long as both the lamp and the hub support Matter.
  • TRÅDFRI – based on Zigbee
TRÅDFRI uses Zigbee, a wireless protocol that has been around for a long time in smart homes. Zigbee requires a compatible hub (for example, a TRÅDFRI gateway or other Zigbee hub) in order for the lights to be controlled via app and remote controls.
In short:
  • KAJPLATS (Matter):
    • Uses the new common standard Matter.
    • Can often work with several different smart home systems that support Matter.
  • TRÅDFRI (Zigbee):
    • Uses the Zigbee protocol.
    • Requires a compatible Zigbee hub for app control and automation.
Which series is best for you depends on which smart home system you already use and whether your other products support Matter or Zigbee.
