[Seoul – June 16, 2019] The Korea+Sweden Young Design Award (KSYDA), created in collaboration between Embassy of Sweden in Seoul, Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP) and IKEA Korea, has announced the three young, passionate Korean designers—Yujin Kang (“The New Handle”), Sanghee Park (“DIY House Kit”) and Hayoung Lee (“Letter Desk”)—as final winners on June 15, 2019, recognising their excellence in demonstrating the core values of the awar

In united efforts to nurture young talents and build stronger, closer cultural relations between Korea and Sweden, KSYDA was first launched in February 2019 with aims to incite interest in the field of design and inspire passionate young designers in Korea to experiment and challenge themselves to create good design that can make a positive difference in this world.

To celebrate this year’s winners, a special honorable award ceremony was held on June 15 at Svensk Form in Stockholm, Sweden, co-hosted by Svensk Form, Swedish Institute, KIDP, and IKEA Korea. First Lady Kim Jung-sook of South Korea during her state visit to Sweden, and Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden attended the award ceremony to join the celebration.

“One's willingness to share what is good creates an equal society, and the thoughtfulness behind inclusive design has the power to transform inconvenience and impossibility into convenience and possibility, honouring the dignity of minorities in our society and freeing them from barriers of gender, age, language or physical disabilities,” said First Lady Kim Jung-sook in her congratulatory address. “’Korea+Sweden Young Design Award’ carries great significance, and I look forward to seeing the young designers of the two countries channel their innovative and creative talents into creating a society where all people can live in equal dignity.”

“The three winners in the Korea + Sweden Young Design Award show the power of design and its ability to change and improve people's living conditions and opportunities in shaping a sustainable future,” said Mats Widbom, managing director of Svensk Form.

At the award ceremony, the KSYDA winners also had the opportunity to network with three winners of the Young Swedish Design (Ung Svensk Form) 2019 to showcase their work and exchange their creative ideas.

Under the three core values and this year’s special theme “inclusiveness,” many creative design work, ideas and concepts across all fields of design embodying inclusive design were submitted and underwent multiple rounds of evaluation led by a jury committee of 10 esteemed designers and opinion leaders from Sweden and Korea reflecting diverse points of views on design. Upon the evaluation of the jury committee, three final winners were selected for their most creative, aesthetically relevant, inclusive and impactful designs, demonstrating their potential to impact people, society and the planet.

The KSYDA winners will receive additional support to grow in the global arena, such as a design trip to Sweden including IKEA of Sweden and the possibility to be recognised and promoted in various exhibitions hosted by the Embassy of Sweden in Seoul and KIDP, including the upcoming Design Korea, Korea’s largest design exhibition in November 2019.
