Stay cool in the heat

Beating the summer heat is easy with these clever, low-tech ideas that won’t blow a hole in your budget.

Damp fabrics can cool your room

Damp curtains, sheets or towels in front of the window hold temperatures down by blocking sunlight and cooling the incoming breeze. Keep them moist with a spray bottle – like the one you use to mist your plants. Ancient-style air conditioning, without the noise or the price tag.

Bed linen for cool comfort

Many fabrics have a natural coolness. Quilt covers, pillowcases and sheets made from cotton, linen and lyocell can help reduce the effects of heat and humidity.

Try sleeping nearer the floor

The occasional warm night tends to interfere with sleeping comfort. A temporary solution can be to simply sleep as close to the floor as possible. After all, heat rises. If your floor is tiled, the cooling effect will be even better.

Keep some ice handy

When the heat is on, a colander full of ice comes in very handy for soothing washcloths, cold drinks, a frozen-water bottle (use like a hot-water bottle, only opposite), and more. Collect the melted water in a bowl so it doesn’t make a mess.
