Are flame retardants used in IKEA products?

We use flame retardants in as few cases as possible in order to pass fire safety testing according to the law.

The IKEA approach to chemicals is to only add them if necessary.

IKEA uses flame retardants in as few cases as possible, as a minimum, we always fulfil legal demands such as The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988, concerning fire safety level and absence of hazardous substances. The Regulations is a UK law to ensure that upholstery components and composites used for furniture supplied in the UK meet specified ignition resistance levels and are suitably labelled.*

All IKEA products are tested and approved according to current regulations and standards. At IKEA your safety is very important to us and we ensure fire protection is built-in already from the start; by choosing the right material for the product, by the design and by performing verification tests of the products.

When visiting our stores you will notice a display label fitted to every item** of new furniture. We also include the safety information label attached to the display of Children’s wall lights in both the Children's and Lighting Department.

*The Regulations do not apply to sleeping bags, bedclothes (including duvets), loose covers for mattresses (i.e. mattress protectors), pillowcases, curtains and carpets. However, it is important to note that these products are covered under General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR).

**With the exception of mattresses, bed-bases, pillows, scatter cushions, seat pads, loose covers sold separately from the furniture and stretch covers.
