What are the different types of mattresses?

These are the main types of mattresses. Within each type you’ll find a lot of different options so you can choose the best comfort and support for you to get a good night’s sleep.

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses distribute body weight evenly over the entire mattress and eliminate pressure concentration in any part of the body. The open spring construction allows air to circulate through the mattress so it doesn't get too hot while you sleep.

Spring mattresses are available in this firmness:

What firmness should you choose?

It all depends on the sleeping position. On your back or on your side, we recommend a medium firm of firm mattress. If you sleep on your stomach, a medium firm mattress.

In a shared bed, where there is no agreement on firmness, choose for two different mattresses. On top, a mattress topper to give the feeling of a double bed.

Foam mattresses

Soft and flexible, foam mattresses provide support by adapting to the contours of your body and distributing your weight evenly. As no pressure is placed on any part of your body, blood flows freely, helping you to fully relax.

A good night’s sleep is the key to well-being, but how we get that important rest is different for everyone. We all sleep in different positions, need different postural support and simply have different taste in comfort. Needless to say – a mattress matters! Understanding the distinct types of mattress will help you choose one which suits your sleep perfectly.

Different types of IKEA Mattress

At IKEA, mattress selection has never been easier. You'll find the most popular mattress types and mattress toppers can not only improve the life span of the mattress but can make the mattress more comfortable. Do you prefer a broad and firm mattress that feels great to stretch out on, or a soft mattress that you can sink into like a dream? One mattress feels like sleeping on a field beneath the stars, another feels like resting on a cloud. We all have different preferences when it comes to mattresses, but you may not have spent much time considering them before. Finding the right one for you can transform the quality of your sleep, so it’s important to choose carefully. Think about which size offers the right amount of space, which level of firmness feels comfy and which material you find relaxing. If you often wake up with aches or pains, chances are you need a different kind of mattress entirely.

Foam and latex mattresses

Foam and latex mattresses mould to the shape of your body and distribute your weight evenly. These mattresses provide support for your whole body without putting extra pressure on any specific body parts. As they absorb impact and lack any loud springs, they are also very quiet – so you or your partner can toss or turn without disturbing the other.

Spring mattresses

Our spring mattresses also distribute your weight evenly, so that there’s no extra pressure on any part of your body. The main differentiator between foam and latex is the open spring construction. This allows air to flow through the mattress and regulate your body temperature while you sleep. The extra ventilation creates a lighter, more breathable feel that’s ideal for those who struggle with overheating at night.

Mattresses in different sizes

Whether your bedroom is grand and open or small and cosy, we can help you choose the perfect sized mattress. Here are our most popular mattress size dimensions – try measuring your space to see which one would fit best.

Choosing the best mattress by comfort grade

Not all mattresses are the same when it comes to mattress comfort. Each mattress has its own advantages and choosing the one is based on the sleeping position and comfort and support you need.

  • Soft mattresses are best suited for side sleepers. This mattress comfort grade type offers a deep cushion hug.-
  • Medium-firm mattresses are ideal for people who sleep on their front and back. These mattress types offer support for the spine.
  • Firm mattresses- are also best for people who sleep on their back because they provide a more stable and even surface which provides support for the spine.
