Transform a simple metal cabinet into a trendy piece of designer furniture

White lacquered furniture has an unfortunate tendency to yellow over time and lose its freshness. And if your metal cabinet has been around long enough to get dented or scratched, it’s only logical to say to yourself, “Come on, let’s get rid of it!” But not so fast! A few little camouflage tricks and trendy colours are enough to give it a new lease on life!

Step 1

Prepare some polyester filler (Soudal Metal Plastic) by mixing the two components (see the exact proportions on the packaging), then fill in the dents and scratches. Apply the filer with a spatula and smooth it. Let it dry.

Step 2

Take the cabinet doors off, degrease the metal and lightly and the visible surfaces.

Step 3

Dedust using a soft cloth. Then apply masking tape to the back of the door slots to seal them off and prevent paint from getting in.

Step 4

Apply a coat of universal primer to the doors and let it dry.

Step 5

Lightly sand and get rid of all the dust.

Step 6

Now apply two coats of lacquer in a trendy colour. Sand lightly and dust between each coat. Let it dry.

Step 7

Sand the filler used to repair the cabinet top to get a perfectly smooth surface.
Measure the length and width of the top, and cut the cork roll (from Brico) to size using a cutter and a metal strip.

Step 8

Apply mounting glue to the top of the cabinet.

Step 9

Now apply two coats of lacquer in a trendy colour. Sand lightly and dust between each coat. Let it dry.

Tip

To transform a simple metal chest of drawers into a very contemporary piece of designer furniture, juxtapose several cabinets and paint the doors in different trendy colours.
