Prolonging life of furniture
Let's do this together
Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, always believed that “waste is a sin”. Småland, where Ingvar grew up, is a rugged, rocky region. At that time, many of its inhabitants lived on little and made the most of almost nothing. That’s why it has always been in our DNA to “do more with less”. We want to share this vision with you and help you discover simple and affordable solutions that will ensure that your furniture and objects last as long as possible.
1. Sorting
Getting rid of clutter in your life
The first step is to be aware of what you own. To do this, learn to sort it out, and do it often. If you're not sure how to do this, read our advice.
Once you've figured out what you own, maximize its use by reselling or donating it to a friend, family member, or charity.
2. Maintenance and repairs
Giving a second life
Repair or renovation is a key element that extends the life of your products. Breathe new life into your furniture! You don't have to buy new to have something new in your home, and it's often easier than you think! All you need is some glue, 2 screws, a little elbow grease and you're set for years to come!
Pssst... At IKEA we have spare parts to help you!
3. Improvements and modifications
Become a designer
Are you tired of your sofa? Don't like your coffee table anymore? Before you get rid of it, why not customize it to suit your style? It's fun and creative. All you need is a new cover, a coat of paint, some handles, or a piece of wallpaper... Find your inner designer and fall in love again with that old piece of furniture you wanted to get rid of.
4. Buying second-hand
Did you know?
In our second life of furniture section, we offer a range of used goods at very affordable prices, with discounts of up to 70%. These may be furniture from our showroom or items brought to us by customers as part of our Second Life of Furniture service, which we then resell. You can also get advice and inspiration on how to live and decorate your home in a more sustainable way.
5. Second life of furniture service
At IKEA, we love our furniture so much that we take it back!
Your old furniture may no longer suit your needs, but it could certainly be of interest to someone else. That's why we buy back used IKEA furniture and help it find a new home through our Second Life of Furniture service. We will offer your furniture in our Discounted Goods Department, and you will receive an IKEA discount card worth up to 50% of its original price.
6. Recycling of materials
A new life awaits them
Even if your furniture cannot be repaired, improved, sold, or donated, it still has a future. If it is properly sorted into individual materials, it can be recycled and turned into something new.
When you buy a new mattress, sofa, or electrical appliance from us with home delivery, you can also take advantage of our old furniture removal and disposal service, which does not have to be from IKEA. We strive to recycle or responsibly dispose of old furniture to minimize our impact on the environment.
