SANDSBERG stands steady in everyday life

Dining tables and chairs have perhaps some of the toughest jobs in the home. Day after day, they stand steady when you throw yourself down for a quick breakfast, when the dinner drags on for several hours or the dining area transforms into a study area. That’s why we put SANDSBERG table and chairs through really tough tests – just like all our products.

No matter what it says on the price tag, you can trust that our tables and chairs, and all the products you find at IKEA, meet strict international safety and quality demands. “We also continue to test on a regular basis as long as a product is available in our range,” says Magnus Wernersson, one of our product developers, who took part in the work with SANDSBERG.

Simulating strains

IKEA uses certified test labs, which means that all tests are done according to international standards. “All our tables undergo both static and fatigue tests to check strength and durability over time. For example, in one of the tests, you let the table fall from a height of a few centimetres to simulate dropping it when refurnishing or moving.”

Quality for different bodies

There’s always a focus on quality and safety already from the start in the product development. “We know from experience already when we do our sketches what dimensions chair legs require. We can also simulate different strains the chair is exposed to in different computer programs,” says Magnus and tells that even when we think we sit entirely still on a chair, we actually move and change the load. “In the development work, we need to take into account the fact that people sit differently and have different bodies. The relatively thin back on the SANDSBERG chair is developed to give flexibility and comfortable support to all backs – and cope with everyday life in your home.”

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

“With the SANDSBERG series, we worked, as always, to create good, functional design with small means. Light, comfortable pieces of furniture that are easy to move around. We used wood and metal, but mixing materials and optimising material use always mean additional challenges to pass tough test requirements and achieve the best possible price. That’s why we’re extra proud to end our 41-year career at IKEA with this series and curious about how it will be received.”
