How does the kitchen space measuring service work?

Before the measurement and during the meeting

  1. It's time to dream a little. Browse our inspiring kitchens or try our online kitchen planners.
  2. You can order the kitchen measurement service in person at an IKEA store or through our Contact center.
  3. Make sure your space is ready for measurement. Walls and ceilings must be finished. Plumbing, gas and electrical connections must be freely available.
  4. During the visit, a professional technician will take photos and gather all the necessary data about your new kitchen space. They will find out the exact dimensions of the room, check the walls or corners and the locations of doors, drains, water supply, etc. To get an idea of what the technician will document, review the list of required kitchen specifications in the section below.

After the kitchen measurement meeting

  1. As part of the IKEA kitchen measurement service, an IKEA technician will take photos and create comprehensive documentation needed for kitchen planning and share these materials with specialists at the IKEA store.
  2. Based on verified measurements, a kitchen specialist will create a plan for the space or update your designs and plans.
  3. If you would like further assistance from us, check out our kitchen planning  service and make an appointment with our kitchen specialist.

How to take your own kitchen measurements

When you’re cooking, it usually doesn’t matter if you use a pinch of salt or an extra pinch of flour. But when you’re planning a new kitchen, every detail counts. That’s why it’s crucial to carefully measure the space where you’ll be installing your kitchen. Give yourself plenty of time to measure everything accurately – and if possible, measure everything more than once to double-check your work. Check out the complete list of what to measure and document. And make sure you have all the tools you need below.

List of required kitchen specifications

  • Room dimensions: You will need measurements for the width, length of the walls and the height of the ceiling. Mark the electrical, water, gas and ventilation connections on each wall. Measure the dimensions and mark the location of obstacles such as radiators, supports, columns, chimneys, etc.
  • Windows: Measure the window dimensions, the distance from the floor to the window, the thickness of the window glazing, and the dimensions of the window frame. Measure the space needed to fully open each window.
  • Doors: Measure the dimensions of the door, the distance from the floor to the door, the thickness of the door, and the dimensions of the door frame. Measure the space needed to fully open the door.
  • Electrical wiring: For electrical outlets, measure the distance from the floor and side walls. Indicate the type of electrical connection (single-phase or three-phase). Note the current and number of appliances you will be connecting (dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, oven). Measure and document the location of light switches.
  • Ventilation opening: Measure the diameter (and if necessary adapt to IKEA standard for flexible pipes), the distance from the floor to the ventilation opening (to the bottom of the opening), the distance from the opening to the side wall (to the edge of the opening).
  • Water connections: Measure the distance to both water sources from the side walls, the distance to the water drain from the floor and wall, and whether there are other water connections (such as for a dishwasher or washing machine).
  • Gas connections: Measure the distance from the floor to the gas connection, the distance from the side wall to the gas connection, the diameter of the gas pipe, the distance from the floor and from the side wall to the gas pipe.
  • Are you planning to relocate electrical outlets, waste, water connections, etc.? Specify where you want these new elements to be.
