How do I measure my existing kitchen before installing my new IKEA kitchen?

When planning a kitchen, every millimetre counts. We offer both written and video guides, which make it quick and easy to measure the kitchen yourself. If you can't take the measurements yourself, we'll help you with our kitchen measuring service.

  1. Preparation before you start measuring your kitchen
To take the right measurements, your kitchen must be in its final condition before you start measuring.
  • Complete all necessary major works: Make sure that all major building work is finished. This includes removing or building walls and applying plasterboard to all walls and ceilings.
  • Finalise utility positions: Your plumbing, gas, and electrical connections must be located in the positions they will occupy in your new kitchen.
  • Gather your tools: You will need a tape or laser measure , a pen and paper, or a notebook to write down your measurements. If you prefer to record the measurements digitally and have suitable equipment available, feel free to use that instead.
  1. Take the measurements of your kitchen
If you are unfamiliar with taking kitchen measurements, we recommend starting by watching our kitchen measurement video instructions. It provides step-by-step instructions with helpful tips and tricks. You can pause the video as you go to measure at your own pace. Alternatively, you could also use our printed kitchen measurement guide to use as a reference while you are taking the measurements.
Make sure you document everything while measuring your kitchen. As you measure, record the following specifications. This is the same detailed list our professional technicians use.
  • Room dimensions: Measure the width, wall length and the ceiling height. On each wall, mark the exact locations and dimensions of all connections for electricity, water, gas, and ventilation. Also measure and record the positions of any obstacles, such as radiators, supporting poles, columns, or chimneys.
  • Windows: For each window, measure its dimensions, the height from the floor to the bottom of the window, and the dimensions of the window frame. Don’t forget to measure the space required to fully open each window.
  • Doors:  For each door, measure its dimensions, the distance from the floor to the bottom of the door, the door's thickness, and the door frame dimensions. Measure the space needed to fully open each door.
  • Electrical: Measure the height of each electrical outlet and switch from the floor, as well as their distance from the nearest side walls. Make a note of the type of electrical connections available (single‑phase, two‑phase, or three‑phase), the voltage, and how many appliances you plan to connect (such as the dishwasher, refrigerator, hob, and oven).
  • Ventilation: Measure the diameter of the ventilation opening, as well as its height from the floor and its distance from the nearest side wall.
  • Water connections: : Measure the distance to your water sources from the sidewalls. Measure the distance to the water drain from both the floor and the wall. Note if there are any additional water connections (e.g., for a dishwasher).
  • Gas connections: Measure the height of the gas connection from the floor and its distance from the nearest side wall. Also measure the diameter of the gas pipe, as well as its height from the floor and distance from the nearest side wall.
  • Ceiling obstacles: Document the position and dimensions of any obstructions, including sloping ceilings.
