What is democratic design?

We believe that every home is possible: it doesn’t matter if your budget is big or small, if you live in the city or the country, in a spacious or tiny home; at IKEA we work with local suppliers and smart design, to create solutions for everyone.

We call this Democratic Design, or Design for All. It’s based on form, function, sustainability, quality, and low prices. Fundamentals we proudly put into every one of our products, to make a possibility out of your dream home.

Did you know that Democratic Design is how IKEA wants to improve the day-to-day life of the many people in the world?

Form

Is there a better way to live at home? Yes, that’s why we’re designing furniture and accessories with one goal in mind: to improve your space and well-being.

Function

Each one of our products is created to solve your daily needs, make them simpler, smarter, and more fun. We think of a future filled with innovation for every home, regardless of how big or small it is.

Sustainability

We’re committed to reducing our climate footprint. Our designs are manufactured with sustainable materials and processes. Also, we’re invested in promoting recycling, saving electricity and water, among other initiatives. When you buy an IKEA product, you become a part of the environmental change.

Did you know that IKEA is one of the founding members of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), which promotes sustainable forest consumption?

Quality

We want each product, as well as the moment you live with it, to be long-lasting. So we look for strong, flexible, and durable materials that comply with the principles of Democratic Design.

Low price

Things shouldn’t be complicated or expensive. Our team is constantly looking for the shapes, materials, alliances, processes, and local suppliers necessary to make our prices always accessible.
