How do I take measurements of my kitchen?

When planning a kitchen, you need accurate information about your room. At IKEA, we have a kitchen planning guide to help you measure your kitchen easily and smoothly. If you find it difficult to measure yourself, you can also use IKEA's Kitchen Home Measurement Service.

  1. Preparing to Measure
To get accurate measurements, the kitchen space you are measuring needs to be ready.
    • Complete all major construction work if in progress
Please finish all major construction work. This includes removing or adding walls, and applying plasterboard to all walls and ceilings.
    • Finalise the position of utilities
It is best to position the plumbing and wiring for your new kitchen with consideration for connecting to the appliances. If you are replacing an existing kitchen, you may choose not to change the position of the utilities.
      • Water supply and drainage
      • Gas facilities
      • Electrical facilities
    • Gather the necessary tools
Please have the following tools ready for measurement:
      • Tape measure, laser distance meter, a ruler that can measure right angles, etc.
      • Writing utensils
      • Memo pad or notebook
      • PC, tablet, smartphone, camera, etc.
  1. How to measure your kitchen
If you are not used to measuring a kitchen, we recommend that you first watch IKEA's "IKEA Kitchen Buying Steps: Installation" and "How to Measure Your IKEA Kitchen". They explain it step-by-step and offer helpful hints and tips. Please proceed with the measurement at your own pace while pausing the video. There is also a printable "DIY Guide for Kitchen Installation" (Only Japanese available). It is convenient to have it on hand for confirmation during measurement.
As you measure, record everything you can. We recommend taking lots of photos.
The following is the same detailed checklist that IKEA's professional installers actually use.
